The best time to visit Japan is in spring (March to May) for cherry blossoms and fall (September to November) for cultural trips. Although these seasons are crowded, tourists choose them to enjoy the Land of the Rising Sun in all its glory.
Let’s dive deeper into traveling around Japan to discover when to plan a trip, how to save money, and which cities to visit.
Japan tourist seasons
It’s not easy to choose the best time to visit Japan. The flow of tourists to Japan never stops. And it is not surprising, because there is something to see every season. In general, Japan has 3 tourist seasons.
- High season. It lasts throughout spring and fall. The weather is pleasant. On the downside, it’s crowded and pricey.
- Shoulder seasons. It starts in late May and lasts until August, and from late November to December.
- Low season. Off-season lasts from January to early March. There are few tourists during this time, and the most popular location is Sapporo (Winter Festival).
Japan cherry blossom season (sakura)
From mid-March to mid-April, cherry blossom trees bloom in Japan. This is the high season. Thousands of tourists from all over the world gather in Japan to see the sakura bloom.

If you are also planning a trip at this time, consider that the cherry blossom seasons differ from city to city. For example, in the south, it begins in March, while in the north, the flowers bloom in May. Every year, starting in October, the government publishes the official cherry blossom schedule for different locations and updates it monthly.
The forecast for 2026 by the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) has already been published in the national media. It looks like this:
| Location | Bloom start date | Bloom end date |
| Kochi | March 22 | March 31 |
| Fukuoka | March 22 | March 31 |
| Kagoshima | March 22 | March 31 |
| Tokyo | March 24 | April 2 |
| Nagoya | March 24 | April 2 |
| Hiroshima | March 24 | April 2 |
| Wakayama | March 26 | April 4 |
| Kyoto | March 27 | April 5 |
| Osaka | March 27 | April 5 |
| Kanazawa | April 2 | April 11 |
| Sendai | April 7 | April 16 |
| Nagano | April 11 | April 20 |
| Aomori | April 21 | April 30 |
| Sapporo | May 1 | May 10 |
The bloom end dates are approximate and based on an average cherry blossom duration of 9 days.
Best time to visit Japan for less crowds
If you want a more relaxing vacation without the crowds, we recommend planning your summer or winter trips.
- The summer months are the least crowded. It is due to the weather. The country is covered with frequent rains from June to July, and the humidity becomes almost 100% with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. At this time, you visit the Gion Matsuri and Nebuta Matsuri festivals or go to the seaside to the resorts of Kamakura or Miyazaki.
- The months from January to March are also uncrowded. The most popular locations are Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. Tourists visit them to enjoy mountain scenery, skiing, and spa treatments.
It is the perfect time for a budget, uncrowded, and no less amazing vacation.
Cheapest time to visit Japan
Japan is expensive for tourists. However, there are months when accommodation and travel tickets become cheaper: during the low season, from January to early March. This time is free of holidays, so hotels and airlines will significantly reduce their prices. Of course, it does not apply to the New Year, so it is better to avoid early January if you plan to save money.
For comparison, you can check out Airbnb accommodation prices in February and April in Tokyo. If in winter, the highest price per night is $3,800, then in peak spring it will reach $5,800.

Travel internet in Japan?
Mobile internet is a part of travel comfort. Overall, mobile networks in Japan are extensive and cover most of the cities with 5G / 4G. Many mobile operators support eSIM (embedded SIM) for local customers, but it can be more complicated for tourists to buy SIM cards from them due to legal regulations (e.g., you might need to visit a physical store, verify your identity, and submit a photo of your passport).
For traveling, we recommend getting a data-only eSIM like Ohayu. It can connect you to supported local networks (NTT Docomo, SoftBank, Rakuten Mobile, KDDI/au) without an ID check or a visit to a physical store. Installation and activation are done in several clicks as long as you are on stable Wi-Fi, and full data usage control is available through iPhone and Android apps.
It can be more affordable than roaming with your home carrier and faster than searching for local operator stores. A 3GB plan for Japan costs around $9. A worldwide plan that covers Japan and 120+ other destinations and automatically switches networks when you cross borders starts from $9.99.
The best time to visit Japan for good weather
Japan has a diverse climate. If you are looking for the most favorable weather conditions for traveling, the periods from March to May and from September to November are most suitable. It is less rainy, and the temperature ranges from 15°C to 22°C.
Summer is suitable for those who are not afraid of heat and humidity. If you are that kind of person, I can recommend visiting Hokkaido. It has a pleasant summer heat and a lot of floral landscapes.
Below, you may see the average temperature in different months in popular tourist locations to choose the best time to visit Japan with the perfect weather.

Must-visit cities in Japan
The top cities that tourists love in Japan are its capital, Tokyo, Hokkaido, Kyoto, Okinawa, and Osaka.
Tokyo
Tokyo is a busy metropolis where ultra-modern buildings coexist with ancient structures. Each city district is unique.

I recommend visiting the Imperial Palace, which is surrounded by the Higashi-Geen and Kitanomaru parks. Among the religious buildings, it is worth seeing the Toshogu Temple, the Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, and the Temple of the Goddess Kannon.
If you want to see the view of the whole city, go to the observation deck of the Tokyo Tower. The view here is magical both during the day and in the evening.
Hokkaido
Hokkaido is the northernmost island, which is beautiful all year round. In winter, it’s a snowy kingdom, in autumn, you’ll see forests and waterfalls, and in spring and summer, you’ll see a giant blooming garden.

You can go skiing in Sapporo. In the same location, you can take part in a tea ceremony in the garden. Other entertainment options include a cruise to the hot springs on the Shiretoko island, exploring the Soonke Gorge, or the Kushiro Crane Park, home to several dozen rare Japanese Tante cranes.
Kyoto
Kyoto is one of the oldest cities. It has been the capital for more than 1,000 years and has many valuable historical monuments. Beautiful temples and palaces, gardens and parks, neighborhoods with geishas, and magnificent views.

The list of top places to visit looks like this:
- Gion Geisha Quarter.
- Nijo Castle.
- Sagano Bamboo Forest.
- Kinkaku-ji Golden Pavilion.
- The Philosopher’s Path hiking trail is shrouded in cherry blossoms.
- Kyoto Tower.
Okinawa
If you’re planning a trip to the sea, Okinawa is a great solution. It is known for its white beaches, crystal-clear water, and magnificent coral reefs. The region has a subtropical climate, which makes it warm all year round. The main island consists of hundreds of beaches with entertainment and resorts.

The best time of year to visit Okinawa is September-October. Although it is already fall, the weather is still warm, without rain or heat.
Osaka
Osaka is the second-largest metropolitan area in Japan, with a rich history and multifaceted culture. The city is famous for its cuisine, ancient temples, and modern skyscrapers that coexist in one place. By the way, if you are planning a vacation with children, Osaka is a great option. There is a 54-hectare theme park, Universal Studios Japan. It has a variety of attractions, characters from your favorite cartoons, and unforgettable shows.

The Kita district is also worth considering for those who like shopping and gastronomy. In addition to museums, there are shops, department stores, underground shopping centers, cafes and restaurants.
Best month to visit Japan
The best month for autumn leaves is November, the best for sakura is late March and early April, and the best for weather and hiking are October and May (except for the Golden Week at the beginning of May, which is very expensive). I’ve prepared an overview of the best attractions for each of them.
January
The weather during your January vacation varies depending on where you spend it. In snow-covered Hokkaido, the temperature hovers around -8°C, and it snows every day. It makes the location ideal for skiers looking for a winter adventure. The center of the country is much warmer at this time, it is around +7°C. There is almost no snow, so it is a great time for leisure tours.
In early January, you may become a part of the Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year) celebration. During this magical time, all families get together, taste symbolic dishes, and admire the symbol of the new year – Kadomatsu, a decoration made of bamboo, pine twigs, sometimes plum, or other trees. All the locations shine with magical lights and fancy decorations.
February
The last month of winter is not much different from its predecessor. It’s just as sunny, cold, and snowy. The ski season is in full swing.
In February, you can get to Setsubun, the end-of-winter holiday celebrated with rituals to ward off evil spirits. Sapporo also hosts the annual Snow Festival. It is one of the largest winter events in Japan, which attracts sculptors from all over the world to present their magnificent ice creations to the public.
March
Spring, including March, is the best time to visit Japan. The weather is rapidly warming up, and everywhere, except for the eastern part of Hokkaido, the temperature is set at +15°C. At the end of the month, the long-awaited cherry blossom flowering begins. Rest in Japan in March is best spent in the gardens of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and other cities.
Spring is also a great opportunity to attend one of the many holidays. One such is Hanatoro – a festival of flowers and light, held annually in Kyoto.
April
Cherry blossoms are in full swing, cities are filled with tourists, and it’s getting warmer outside: it’s April. This month is the peak of the season, when everyone wants to admire the trees in full bloom.
In April, you may become a guest of the Kanamara Matsuri. It is a fertility festival, held in Kawasaki. It is one of the most massive celebrations, famous for its parades, traditional songs, and ancient symbols.
May
In early May, cities enjoy warm weather, which is replaced by heat and high humidity by the end of the month. This is the time of greenery and the beginning of the sea season.
If you come in May, you will be lucky to visit Golden Week! This is a series of holidays (April 29-May 5), which begins with Showa Day, Constitution Day, and Greenery Day, and ends with Children’s Day.
June
Vacations in the Land of the Rising Sun in June are unpopular. This time is the peak of prolonged rains, high temperatures, and humidity. Traveling to Japan in June is unfavorable, even to the sea, because the rain interferes with swimming and sunbathing.
As part of the celebrations, you can visit the Ajisai Matsuri. It takes place in gardens and shows the beauty of blooming hydrangeas.
July
It is better to plan a vacation in Japan at the end of July when the rainy season ends. Beach tours to Kamakura, Okinawa, and other resorts in the country are especially popular. You may also go to the mountains because they are a little cooler and picturesque.
In July, you will be greeted by the most famous festival – Gion Matsuri, located in Kyoto. People wear national costumes and enjoy street food. There is also a fleet parade.
August
August is the time for a seaside vacation. You will have a great time soaking up the beaches of Kamakura, Miyazaki, Ryukyu, and Okinawa.
In August, Tokyo surprises its visitors with the most beautiful fireworks show. Another must-visit is the Nebuta Matsuri festival. The celebration is held with large papier-mâché figures that fill all the streets at night.
September
Holidays in September are one of the most favorable periods for excursions. The heat subsides, the humidity becomes lower, and the rains end. It’s a great time to spend sightseeing in Kyoto and other ancient towns. During an autumn trip, city gardens and parks will be waiting for you. At this time, chrysanthemums bloom, and maple leaves turn red. Nature becomes fabulous and picturesque.
As for events, Tokyo hosts a sumo tournament.
October
October is the peak of the fall season. It is the best time to visit Japan in the fall. The whole country is bathed in bright red colors, and tourists enjoy the warm sunshine. It is also a great time to go to the mountains.
The Takayama Autumn Festival will be held. It is a holiday when beautiful floats decorated with carvings and lanterns parade the streets.
November
It gets colder in November. However, it’s not a barrier for those who want to visit museums, see ancient monuments, and just walk around the town. It’s also a great opportunity for gourmets to eat a variety of fish dishes, which are in season here.
Autumn Leaves Viewing holiday is coming. It is the period when people admire the falling leaves and prepare for winter.
December
Light frosts begin in early winter, although it is still warm in the central cities. Skiing and ice skating have already begun.
In Tokyo, due to strong winds in December, regular kite flying is organized. Fireworks are set off to fight the darkness. Japan also celebrates Christmas.
Summing it up
Japan is a country that attracts tourists all year round. However, the most attractive seasons for great weather and lots of events are spring and autumn.
Whenever you are going on a trip, plan in advance. We recommend booking a hotel, creating a list of places to visit, and taking care of your Internet connection.
