Important Australia travel information

In Australia, network quality is strong, and travellers can buy local SIM cards or online eSIMs to get connected.

ID is required to buy a local SIM card

The Telecommunications Act 1997, by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, is the law that requires all users to register with a photo ID to get SIM cards, both prepaid and postpaid.

It means that even if you are on a short trip and want to get a SIM at an airport kiosk, all local providers will ask you to verify your identity. In 2025-2026 after Telstra received a warning for failing these rules, the regulator made the requirements even stricter and added Digital ID checks (can be remote, but collects user biometrics, signatures, and other personal data).

Data-only travel eSIMs for Australia, like Ohayu, are installed online and do not require official registration, because they don’t come with local phone numbers. Their biggest benefit is quick setup and no identity check after arrival.

Australia doesn’t have 3G

There are only 4G and 5G in Australia. Insecure 3G connection was shut down in 2024. It might sound cool, but before traveling to Australia, you need to make sure your phone supports 4G/5G, because otherwise, you won’t be able to get mobile internet or make phone calls.

It’s a very Australia-specific thing, worth checking before you trip if you use an older handset.

Android phones released before 2015 and Apple devices before iPhone 6 are non-4G, which means they won’t be able to connect to Australian local networks.

Frequently asked questions from Australia travelers

  • Yes, major local mobile carriers like Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone support eSIM. You can also find traveler-friendly data plans through platforms like Ohayu.com.

  • Buying a prepaid plan beforehand is more convenient and saves time. See the available packages on this page or in the app (iPhone and Android). After purchase, you can activate it at an airport when you arrive at your destination. Some airports with unlimited free Wi-Fi are Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD), Perth (PER), Adelaide (ADL), Darwin (DRW), and Hobart (HBA).

Also, most major shopping centers like Westfield malls or Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne offer free Wi-Fi so you can download, install, and activate the eSIM plan.

  • It works on popular islands like Whitsunday or Kangaroo. The 4G coverage is available but not widespread (mainly in the coastal towns and bays such as Kingscote or Emu Bay).

  • Coverage might be less consistent in remote or high-altitude areas like the Snowy Mountains. You can expect 4G speeds in the Smiggin Holes and Thredbo ski resorts.

  • Digital SIMs do not include an Australian phone number – you pay only for internet data. To stay in touch, you can use mobile communication apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime to make VoIP calls and send online messages.

  • If you are thinking about a short visit to New Zealand, consider purchasing the NZ package for a week or two. For longer trips, consider subscribing to a monthly global plan.
