Coverage and network

Coverage across the lagoon city

Ivory Coast mobile networks

Abidjan is West Africa's largest francophone city and the region's commercial centre, built around a lagoon and split across several peninsulas. Orange has the widest reach and has rolled out 5G in the city. Outside Abidjan and the main corridors, coverage is 4G at best and patchy in the west.

Orange

Abidjan, specifically

  • Plateau, Cocody, Marcory: The business and residential districts are well covered, and 5G reaches parts of them.
  • The lagoon and the bridges: Abidjan's geography means you cross water constantly. The bridges and the lagoon taxis hold signal - the water is enclosed and built up on both sides.
  • Treichville and Adjamé markets: Covered, and extremely busy. Uploads slow in the market crush, and these are places to keep a phone in a pocket rather than in your hand.
  • Grand-Bassam and the coast road: The old colonial town half an hour east is covered, as is the coast road. The beaches beyond it thin out.
  • Inland to Yamoussoukro and the west: The motorway north to the political capital is covered. The far west towards the Liberian and Guinean borders is the thinnest part of the country.

All of Côte d'Ivoire

The plan covers the whole country. Ghana, Liberia, Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso across the borders each need their own plan.

Arriving in Abidjan

Félix-Houphouët-Boigny airport

The airport has free Wi-Fi in the terminal, though no network name is reliably published. It is close to the city, and arranging a ride rather than negotiating at the kerb is the usual advice - which needs data first.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Abidjan?

Orange, MTN and Moov have shops across the city and at the airport. Côte d'Ivoire requires identity registration for a local line, so bring your passport. Orange has the best coverage if you are travelling upcountry.

Is French the only language for this?

Effectively, yes, in shops and at counters - Côte d'Ivoire is francophone and English is not widely spoken outside international hotels. That is one practical argument for sorting data out before arrival rather than negotiating a SIM purchase in a second language on your first day.

Does coverage reach the west of the country?

Less well. The corridors to Yamoussoukro and San-Pédro are covered, but the far west towards the Liberian and Guinean borders is thin, and the roads there are slow. Download maps if you are heading that way, and check current advice on those border regions before you go.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Abidjan?

Upcountry in the west, gaps are genuine. In the city, check the phone is drawing data from the Ohayu line with roaming on, then flip Airplane mode once. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
