Real Baku conditions
- Boulevard & Flame Towers: Strong coverage along the Caspian boulevard, around the Flame Towers, and through the modern districts. Fast enough for video calls outdoors.
- Icherisheher (Old City): Coverage is fine in the walled old city, though the narrow lanes and thick stone can weaken indoor signal in the older buildings and caravanserais.
- Gobustan, Quba & Sheki: Day trips to Gobustan and the Absheron peninsula hold signal. Head north to Quba or west to Sheki and the mountain roads get patchier between towns.
One eSIM, the whole country
Baku is just the start - this eSIM covers all of Azerbaijan. Keep the same plan for Sheki, Quba, or Gabala.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Baku?
There are Azercell, Bakcell and Nar stores at the airport and throughout the city, and you will need your passport at the counter. A travel eSIM like Ohayu skips the shop - install before you fly and after landing it can connect you to supported networks like Azercell, Bakcell or Nar.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Baku?
Yes - bring your passport to buy a local Azerbaijani SIM. Travel eSIMs like Ohayu are data-only and do not assign you an Azerbaijani number, so there is no counter and no passport step.
What is Azerbaijan's phone IMEI registration rule?
Azerbaijan runs a national IMEI database. If you bring a handset from abroad and use it with a local Azerbaijani SIM, the device has to be registered within 30 days of that first connection or it gets blocked on all Azerbaijani networks. Registration is done via imei.az, my.gov.az, ASAN service centres or post offices, with your passport and the IMEI (dial *#06# to find it).
The trigger is using a local SIM, not the length of your stay. Ohayu eSIMs are data-only and issue no Azerbaijani number, so buying one does not put you through that process - but if you also plan to use a local SIM on a longer trip, check the current rules and fees at imei.az first, since the fee structure has been revised more than once.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Baku?
On the mountain roads to Quba or Sheki it gets patchy between towns. If the cause is not local, make sure Ohayu is your data line and roaming is switched on, then cycle Airplane mode once. If it stays down, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
