Colombia mobile networks

Colombia averages 45 Mbps at 82nd globally, which is modest - but Bogotá is by far the best-served city in the country, with 5G reaching roughly 69% of the urban area against about 19% nationally. Expect a real drop the moment you leave the big cities. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Bogotá, specifically

  • Chapinero, Usaquén, La Candelaria: Reliable across the northern districts and the historic centre. Ride-hailing is how most visitors move around and it works.
  • TransMilenio: Covered along the busway corridors and at the stations, which matters because journeys across this city are long.
  • Monserrate: Signal at the summit and on the funicular, so the photo goes up from the top.
  • Beyond the sabana: Zipaquirá and the nearby towns are fine. Head into the mountains toward Villa de Leyva or the coffee region and coverage becomes patchy between settlements.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Bogotá?

Claro, Tigo and Movistar have official stores in Andino and Unicentro. Use those rather than a street kiosk - kiosks routinely refuse foreign passports. El Dorado has counters too.

Do I need ID to buy a prepaid SIM in Colombia?

Yes. Every Colombian mobile line has to be registered against an ID document, under rules that trace back to Ley 1453 of 2011 and now sit in CRC Resolución 5050 of 2016. A passport is a valid document type in the operators' registration flows.

Retail practice is the awkward part: many kiosks and third-party resellers will ask for a cédula de extranjería and turn you away, so go to an official operator store in person. Colombia also runs IMEI registration for handsets on local SIMs - that does not apply to a roaming travel eSIM. Ohayu plans issue no Colombian number, so there is nothing to register.

Is 5G available, and how much worse is it outside Bogotá?

Bogotá has the best 5G in Colombia at roughly 69% urban coverage. Medellín and Cali sit closer to 53%, and nationally urban 5G is around 19%, so most of the country is 4G. Claro has built the large majority of 5G sites. For a city trip you will notice the difference; in the coffee region or on the coast, plan for 4G.
