Coverage and network
Honest about coverage
Belgium mobile networks
Belgium ranks 32nd globally at 143 Mbps - the fastest country in Western Europe on this list - and Brussels itself runs 185 Mbps download. The country is small and densely covered, so there is very little to warn you about. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Real Brussels conditions
- Grand Place & the EU quarter: Strong 5G across the centre, the EU institutions area, Ixelles and Saint-Gilles. No trouble with video calls anywhere in the city.
- Metro & trains: The Brussels metro has coverage in stations and most tunnel sections. Intercity trains to Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp hold signal for essentially the whole journey.
- Charleroi is not Brussels: Worth knowing before you book: "Brussels South Charleroi" is about 55 km from the city, roughly an hour by shuttle bus. Coverage is fine there, it is just a lot further out than the name suggests.
One eSIM, the whole country
Brussels is just the start - this eSIM covers all of Belgium. Keep the same plan for Bruges, Ghent, or Antwerp.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Brussels?
There are Proximus, Orange and BASE shops across the city, and retailers like Carrefour, MediaMarkt and Relay register prepaid SIMs against a passport. Avoid the very cheap MVNOs unless you have Belgian ID - see the next question. A travel eSIM like Ohayu skips the whole thing: install before you fly and after landing it can connect you to supported networks like Proximus, Orange or BASE.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Brussels?
Yes. Belgium has required prepaid SIM registration since December 2016, under the Act of 1 September 2016 and the Royal Decree of 27 November 2016. The good news for visitors is that a foreign passport is accepted - you do not need Belgian ID.
The catch is which retailer you pick. Several budget MVNOs only offer online registration that requires a Belgian eID, residence permit or a Belgian payment method like Bancontact, with no in-shop or passport route. Buy from a big-operator store or a retailer that registers passports at the counter. Travel eSIMs like Ohayu have no registration step - they are data-only with no Belgian number.
Will it work on day trips to Bruges, Ghent or Antwerp?
Yes, and well. Belgium is compact and densely covered, so the intercity trains hold signal nearly the whole way and all three cities have strong 5G. The same eSIM covers them - no need for anything extra.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Brussels?
In the Metro tunnels and the deeper Gare du Midi levels, expect a dip. When it is none of those, the culprit is nearly always the data-line setting. Choose Ohayu, permit roaming, flip Airplane mode. Otherwise chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
