Romania mobile networks

Romania averages about 85 Mbps and Bucharest around 116. Romania has a long-standing reputation for cheap, fast internet, which is mostly about fixed broadband - the mobile network is good in the cities and ordinary in the mountains.

Bucharest and Romania, specifically

  • Old Town, Victoriei, Floreasca: Reliable 4G and 5G. The centre is well covered and data is cheap.
  • The metro: Covered on all lines including the deeper stretches.
  • Out to Peleș and Sinaia: The Prahova valley road and the towns are covered. It is the standard day trip and the castle grounds are fine.
  • The Transfăgărășan and the high passes: The mountain roads lose signal on the switchbacks and above the tree line. The Transfăgărășan closes with snow for much of the year, and checking whether it is open matters more than the signal does.
  • The Danube Delta: The channels beyond Tulcea are among the emptiest places in the EU, and coverage falls away between the villages. Boat trips there go offline.

Romania, and the EU

The plan covers the whole country, and EU roaming carries it into Bulgaria or Hungary. Moldova and Serbia are outside the EU roaming area.

Arriving in Bucharest

Airport Wi-Fi at Otopeni

Henri Coandă has free terminal Wi-Fi. The rail link into the city is relatively new and the bus is still common, so checking which is running properly on the day is a reasonable use of five minutes online.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Bucharest?

Orange, Vodafone and Digi have shops in the malls and the centre. Romania requires identification for a prepaid line. Data is cheap here by EU standards, and Digi in particular competes on price.

Is there coverage on the Transfăgărășan?

Patchily. The road climbs to over 2,000 m in a series of switchbacks and loses signal on the shadowed side of ridges. The more important point is that it closes under snow from roughly late October to June - check that it is actually open before you plan the drive, because the detour is long.

Does the plan cover Moldova?

No. Moldova is not in the EU and sits outside the roaming area, so a Romanian plan stops at the Prut. Coverage holds up to the crossings on the Romanian side.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Bucharest?

In the Carpathian passes or out in the Danube Delta, gaps are genuine. In the city, confirm Ohayu is your mobile data line with roaming enabled, then flip Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
