Coverage and network

Hungary mobile networks
Hungary runs around 93 Mbps nationally and ranks 50th, but Budapest measures about 135 Mbps - the gap between the capital and the country is wider here than in most of Europe. All three operators have 5G across the city.

#69 of 98
Budapest, specifically
- Pest side - District V, VI, VII: Strong 5G. The ruin bar quarter around Kazinczy utca is dense with people at night and slows on uploads, not on maps.
- Buda side and Castle Hill: Covered, including up at the Fisherman's Bastion. The funicular and the hill roads are fine.
- Metro Line 1: The oldest underground line in continental Europe, opened 1896, and it runs shallow - coverage is fine. Lines 2, 3 and 4 are deeper and mostly covered, with occasional drops in the longer tunnel sections.
- The thermal baths: Széchenyi and Gellért have signal, but these are humid stone halls and you will not want your phone out. Most baths have lockers for a reason.
- Danube cruises and the river: Coverage holds along the whole city stretch - you are never far from either bank.
Hungary, and the EU
The plan covers all of Hungary - Budapest, Lake Balaton, Eger - and EU roaming carries it into Austria, Slovakia or Romania at domestic rates.

Arriving in Budapest
Airport Wi-Fi at BUD
Liszt Ferenc has free unlimited Wi-Fi, though it wants an email address before it lets you through. The airport is 16 km out and the 100E bus into town is where you will actually want a connection.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Budapest?
Telekom, Yettel and One have shops in the Westend and Arena malls and along Andrássy út, and the newsagent chains sell top-up vouchers. There are counters at the airport with the usual airport pricing.
Do I need ID to buy a prepaid SIM in Hungary?
Yes - Hungary is among the EU states that require SIMs to be registered to an identified owner, so expect the shop to take your passport details. It is quick. Ohayu plans carry no Hungarian number, so nothing needs registering.
Does one plan cover Vienna too?
Yes. Hungary and Austria are both EU members, so the same plan runs at domestic rates across the border - and Budapest to Vienna is two and a half hours on the train, which is why this comes up so often. The fair-use terms on prepaid bundles are aimed at people effectively living abroad on a domestic plan, not at a short trip.
eSIM not working in Budapest?
On the deeper metro lines a brief drop in a long tunnel is normal. Above ground, check the phone is drawing data from the Ohayu line with roaming allowed, then toggle Airplane mode once. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
