Coverage and network
Coverage peninsula, island and interior
Senegal mobile networks
Dakar sits on a peninsula at the westernmost point of mainland Africa, and the city is well covered by Orange in particular - it has 5G in parts. The country beyond is 4G along the main routes and thinner in the east and the Casamance.
Dakar and Senegal, specifically
- Plateau, Almadies, Ngor: Reliable coverage across the city and out to the western tip.
- Île de Gorée: The ferry runs 20 minutes from the port and the island is covered - it is close enough to the city that the mainland masts reach it.
- Lac Rose and the Lompoul dunes: Covered near the settlements. The dune tracks and the quieter stretches of the Grande Côte drop out.
- Saint-Louis and the north: The colonial town and the road up are covered. Djoudj bird sanctuary near the Mauritanian border is thin, and the pirogue trips through the channels lose signal.
- The Casamance: The southern region beyond The Gambia is the thinnest part of the country, and the overland route crosses Gambian territory - which this plan does not cover. Most people fly to Ziguinchor for that reason.
All of Senegal
The plan covers the whole country. The Gambia sits inside Senegal geographically but is a separate country and plan - relevant if you drive to the Casamance.

Arriving in Dakar
Blaise Diagne airport
Dakar's airport is at Diass, about 45 km from the city - a considerably longer transfer than the old airport, and a toll motorway. It has free terminal Wi-Fi. Having a ride arranged before that drive is worth the trouble.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Dakar?
Orange has the widest coverage and shops throughout the city and at the airport; Free is the cheaper challenger. Senegal registers lines against an identity document, so take your passport.
Does the drive to the Casamance stay covered?
No, and the reason is geographic rather than technical: the overland route to Ziguinchor passes through The Gambia, which is a separate country needing its own plan. That is one of several reasons most travellers fly instead. Coverage in the Casamance itself is the thinnest in Senegal.
Is the airport transfer really that long?
Yes - Blaise Diagne is at Diass, roughly 45 km out, and the drive on the toll road takes about an hour depending on traffic. It replaced the old city airport, so older guidance about a short hop into town is out of date. Worth having a ride arranged rather than sorting it on arrival.
eSIM not working in Dakar?
In the Casamance, out on the dunes or on a pirogue through the channels, gaps are real - and if you have driven into The Gambia you are outside the plan. In the city, set Ohayu as your data line, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
