Coverage and network
Honest about coverage
Bangladesh mobile networks
Being straight with you: Bangladesh is the slowest country on our list, averaging 38 Mbps at 88th globally, with Dhaka at 49 Mbps. Coverage is broad and 4G is everywhere in the city, but 5G is still barely deployed, and Dhaka's density means congestion is the real constraint. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Real Dhaka conditions
- Gulshan, Banani & Dhanmondi: The most reliable parts of the city. Solid 4G for maps, ride-hailing and messaging, and good enough for video calls most of the day.
- Peak-hour congestion: Dhaka is one of the densest cities on earth and the networks show it. Speeds dip noticeably during rush hour and in crowded markets - local SIMs hit exactly the same walls.
- Old Dhaka & beyond the city: Coverage reaches Old Dhaka but the narrow lanes and dense buildings weaken it indoors. Intercity routes to Sylhet or Chattogram are covered along the highways, thinning in rural stretches and the Sundarbans.
One eSIM, the whole country
Dhaka is just the start - this eSIM covers all of Bangladesh. Keep the same plan for Chattogram, Sylhet, or Cox's Bazar.

Free Wi-Fi at Hazrat Shahjalal Airport
No eSIM on the phone yet? Hazrat Shahjalal relaunched airport-wide free Wi-Fi in May 2026 across all terminals - you register with your name and mobile number to get an SMS code, and the Wi-Fi help desk can issue one if you have no local number yet.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Dhaka?
Authorised Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink retailers and customer-care desks sell tourist SIMs, including at the ports of entry. Be ready for a fingerprint scan at the counter - see the next question. A travel eSIM like Ohayu avoids that process entirely: install before you fly and after landing it can connect you to supported networks like Grameenphone, Robi or Banglalink.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Dhaka?
Yes, and Bangladesh is stricter than most places. Every SIM is registered through BTRC's biometric verification system, so buying a local SIM means presenting your passport and having your fingerprints scanned at the point of sale.
There is a dedicated tourist SIM scheme: 7, 15 or 30-day validity, issued from a separate number range, maximum two SIMs per passport, available at authorised retailers and customer-care desks at all air, land and sea ports of entry.
Travel eSIMs like Ohayu sit outside all of that - they are data-only with no Bangladeshi number, so there is no biometric step and no passport registration.
Is 5G available in Dhaka?
Barely. Bangladesh has run 5G trials and limited launches, but as of 2026 the practical experience in Dhaka is 4G. Expect around 49 Mbps on a good connection - fine for maps, messaging, ride-hailing and standard video calls, but not the speeds you would get in Singapore or Dubai.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Dhaka?
In heavy traffic under a flyover, or during a local outage, it can drop. Beyond that: Ohayu set for mobile data, roaming on, Airplane mode toggled. If the connection still will not come up, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
