Tunisia mobile networks

Tunisia averages about 56 Mbps and ranks 76th, on 4G rather than 5G. The coastal strip from Tunis down through Monastir and Sousse is well covered because that is where the population and the tourism are. The interior and the Sahara are not.

Monastir, specifically

  • The marina, the medina and the ribat: Covered across the town. The ribat's thick stone walls weaken signal inside, as you would expect of an eighth-century fortress.
  • The resort strip and Skanes: Well served - this is charter-holiday country and the hotels expect it to work.
  • Sousse and El Jem: Both covered, half an hour and an hour away. The El Jem amphitheatre's underground passages have nothing.
  • The Sahara and the south: Tozeur, Douz and the desert are covered in the towns and thin between them. Dune excursions and the salt flats go out of range, and this is the part of Tunisia where a working map matters most.
  • The louage and the roads: Shared minibuses are the normal way between towns and they leave when full rather than on a timetable, so live information is limited whatever your signal.

All of Tunisia

The plan covers the whole country - the coast, Tunis, Djerba and the Sahara towns. Algeria and Libya across the borders are separate.

Arriving in Monastir

Habib Bourguiba airport

Monastir's airport has free terminal Wi-Fi and is close to the resorts. It is heavily seasonal charter traffic, so outside summer both flights and facilities reduce considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Monastir?

Ooredoo, Orange and Tunisie Telecom have shops in the town and at the airport. Tunisia requires passport registration for a local line. Prices are low, and Ooredoo generally has the best data coverage if you are heading south.

Is there coverage in the Sahara?

In the towns - Tozeur, Douz, Matmata - yes. Out on the dunes, the salt flats and the desert tracks, no. Excursions from the coast are long days and go well out of range, so download maps and settle arrangements with your driver before you leave.

Is Tunisia on 5G?

Not meaningfully yet. The network is 4G, averaging about 56 Mbps nationally, which handles maps, messaging and calls without difficulty. If you need to move large files, plan around hotel Wi-Fi rather than mobile.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Monastir?

Inside the ribat's stone walls or out in the desert, a drop is expected. On the coast, confirm Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
