Muscat and Oman, specifically

  • Muttrah, Ruwi, Al Khuwair: Fast 5G along the coastal strip where the city actually is - Muscat is strung out along the coast rather than clustered.
  • The wadis: Wadi Shab, Wadi Bani Khalid and the rest are steep-sided canyons, and signal goes as you descend into them. Wadi Shab involves a boat and then a swim through a narrow gorge, where you will have nothing. Download directions - the parking areas are unmarked.
  • Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar: The mountain villages and the main roads up are covered. The rim walks and the deeper canyon paths drop out, and the roads need a 4x4.
  • Wahiba Sands: Camps have coverage or their own Wi-Fi. Driving into the dunes loses it fairly quickly, and getting stuck out there without a plan is a real risk.
  • Musandam: The peninsula is separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE, and the dhow cruises in the fjords lose signal between the cliffs. If you drive there you cross UAE territory, which this plan does not cover.

All of Oman

The plan covers the whole Sultanate, Musandam included. Driving to Musandam crosses the UAE, which needs its own plan.

Arriving in Muscat

Airport Wi-Fi at MCT

Muscat International has free terminal Wi-Fi. Most visitors pick up a hire car here, because Oman is a driving country and the distances are large - which makes a working map the first thing you actually need.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Muscat?

Omantel and Ooredoo have counters at the airport and shops in the malls. Oman requires identification for a local line, so bring your passport. Tourist bundles are straightforward and the airport desks are used to visitors.

Will I have signal in the wadis?

Descending into one, no. Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid are steep gorges and coverage goes as the walls close in - Wadi Shab ends in a swim through a slot canyon where nothing reaches. The car parks are unsigned too, so save the route offline before you leave the highway.

Does the plan cover the drive to Musandam?

Musandam itself is Omani and covered, but the road there crosses the UAE, and this plan does not cover that stretch. Most people fly or take the ferry from Muscat for exactly this reason. If you drive, you need a UAE plan for the middle of the journey.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Muscat?

Down in a wadi or out in the Wahiba dunes there is often nothing in range at all. On the coast, make Ohayu the mobile data line, allow roaming, then flip Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
