Coverage and network
Coverage and where it stops
Northern Cyprus mobile networks
Northern Cyprus is served by two operators, KKTCELL - Turkcell's local network - and KKTC Telsim, which trades under the Vodafone brand. Both run 4.5G across the populated north. Neither interconnects with the networks in the south, which is the single most important thing to understand here.
Northern Cyprus, specifically
- Kyrenia, Nicosia north, Famagusta: Solid 4.5G through the main towns, along with İskele, Lapta and Alsancak and the roads between them.
- Crossing the Green Line: Coverage stops. A northern SIM does not work in the Republic of Cyprus and a southern one does not work here - the two sides' networks are entirely separate. Nicosia is the odd case: you can walk across at Ledra Palace or Ledra Street and change telecoms regimes in a few metres, and phones near the line do flip between them.
- The Karpaz peninsula: The long finger northeast towards Cape Apostolos Andreas thins out well before the end. The wild donkeys and the beaches are the draw; coverage is not.
- The Beşparmak / Kyrenia mountains: The coast road and the passes are covered. Buffavento and the ridge tracks behind the range lose it.
- Ercan airport: Both operators have counters in the terminal. Worth knowing that flights to Ercan must route through Türkiye - there are no direct services from elsewhere, because the airport is not internationally recognised.
Northern Cyprus, not the Republic
This plan covers Northern Cyprus on the KKTCELL and Telsim networks. The Republic of Cyprus in the south is a separate destination and a separate plan - and being in the EU, it also sits under EU roaming rules that do not apply here.
How to install eSIM
Connected in 3 steps
- 01
Buy before you fly
Choose your data plan before your trip.
- 02
Download & install
Log in to your account, tap your eSIM, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- 03
Land & activate
Activate when you arrive in Northern Cyprus. Turn on roaming for the eSIM and it connects to a local network.
Before you buy, make sure your phone supports eSIM — see Ohayu compatible devices list or dial *#06#. It's a free request to your phone's settings. If you see the EID number — your phone is eSIM-compatible.
Arriving in Northern Cyprus
Ercan, or overland from the south
Ercan has free terminal Wi-Fi and operator counters, but all flights to it connect through Türkiye. Many visitors fly into Larnaca in the south instead and cross by road - which means arriving on a plan that stops working partway through the journey unless you have sorted the north out separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Cyprus plan work in Northern Cyprus?
No, and this is the mistake worth avoiding. The north runs on KKTCELL and KKTC Telsim, which are separate from the Republic of Cyprus operators in the south - the two networks do not interconnect for this purpose. A Cyprus plan stops working when you cross the Green Line, and a northern plan does not work in the south.
Northern Cyprus is also outside the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home does not apply and roaming rates here are unregulated. If your trip takes in both sides of the island, you need both plans.
Where to buy a SIM card in Northern Cyprus?
KKTCELL and Telsim both have counters at Ercan airport and shops in Kyrenia and Nicosia. You will need your passport. KKTCELL generally has the wider reach if you are heading out to Karpaz.
How do I actually get there?
Two routes. Flights to Ercan all connect through Türkiye, because the airport is not internationally recognised, so there are no direct services from anywhere else. Or you fly into Larnaca or Paphos in the south and cross by road at one of the Green Line checkpoints - Nicosia's are walkable. If you take the second route, your southern plan will stop working at the crossing.
eSIM not working in Northern Cyprus?
Check the network name first - near the Green Line, and especially in Nicosia, phones flip between northern and southern networks, and only the northern ones are on this plan. Out on the Karpaz peninsula there are genuine gaps. Otherwise set Ohayu as your mobile data line, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
