North Macedonia mobile networks
North Macedonia ranks 11th in the world at about 192 Mbps, and Skopje measures around 362 - eighth among cities globally. Those numbers are startling for a country of two million people, and they are real: the operators built out aggressively and the country is small enough to cover.

Skopje and North Macedonia, specifically
- Central Skopje and the Old Bazaar: Very fast 5G. The Ottoman bazaar's lanes are narrow but low, so they cause little trouble.
- Matka canyon: Half an hour from the city. The gorge walls shadow signal and the caves have none - it is a short trip that goes properly offline.
- Mount Vodno and the Millennium Cross: The cable car and the summit are covered; the walking trails up the side are patchier.
- Ohrid: Three hours southwest and well covered around the lake and the old town. The mountain roads over Galičica between Ohrid and Prespa lose signal on the pass.
- Mavrovo and the west: The national park and the villages towards the Albanian border are the thinnest part of the country.
North Macedonia, not the EU
The plan covers the whole country. North Macedonia is an EU candidate rather than a member, so EU roam-like-at-home does not apply and a European plan bills international rates here.

Arriving in Skopje
Airport Wi-Fi at SKP
Skopje International has free terminal Wi-Fi. It is about 20 km from the city and the shuttle bus is infrequent, so knowing the timetable before you land saves a long wait or an overpriced taxi.

Frequently asked questions
Does an EU plan work in North Macedonia?
No. The country is an EU candidate, not a member, so roam-like-at-home does not extend here and a European SIM will bill international roaming or refuse to work. The Western Balkans roaming agreement covers travel between Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia, but not travel from the EU.
How is a country this small so fast?
Two million people in a compact, mostly valley-shaped country is a straightforward network to build, and A1 and Telekom both invested early in 5G. Skopje's roughly 362 Mbps puts it eighth among cities measured worldwide - ahead of Seoul and Dubai. It is a real result rather than a statistical quirk.
Where to buy a SIM card in Skopje?
A1 and Telekom have shops in the City Mall and along the main streets. Passport registration is required. Prices are low, and data bundles here are among the cheapest in Europe.
eSIM not working in Skopje?
In the Matka gorge or its caves, or on the Galičica pass, there is nothing to reach. In the city, this is unusually reliable ground - check Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
