Taipei, specifically
- Xinyi, Da'an, Zhongshan: Strong 5G. Taipei 101 and the surrounding district are thoroughly covered.
- The MRT: Covered across the network including the deep stations. Taiwan equips its metro thoroughly, and the airport line holds signal the whole way in.
- Yangmingshan and the hills: The national park above the city is covered on the main roads and around the visitor centres; the trails and the volcanic fumarole areas are patchier.
- Typhoons: Taiwan takes direct hits most years between July and October. Networks generally survive, but power cuts take individual sites down and the mountain roads close for landslides - sometimes for weeks.
- The east coast and Taroko: The gorge and the coast road are covered in places and not in others, and the terrain is genuinely severe. Taroko has been repeatedly closed by earthquakes and landslides, so check access before you travel rather than assuming.
All of Taiwan
The plan covers the whole island - Taipei, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien - and the outlying islands where there is coverage to have.

Arriving in Taipei
Taoyuan airport
Taoyuan has free terminal Wi-Fi and an MRT line into the city taking about 35 minutes. Taiwan also has an extensive free public Wi-Fi network, iTaiwan, though registering for it is easier with a local number than without.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Taipei?
The three operators all have counters in Taoyuan's arrivals halls, which is where most visitors buy - tourist data packs are cheap and the process is quick with a passport. Taiwan requires identification for a local line. City shops are plentiful too.
Can I use the free public Wi-Fi instead?
Partly. Taiwan's iTaiwan network covers a lot of public buildings and transport, and it is genuinely useful - but registering typically expects a local mobile number, which is the same wall you hit in Korea. Having your own data avoids the loop.
What happens during a typhoon?
The network usually holds; the transport does not. Between July and October Taiwan takes direct typhoon hits, high-speed rail and flights stop, and mountain roads close for landslides that can take weeks to clear. Being connected is how you find out what is running.
eSIM not working in Taipei?
In the mountains or along the east coast, gaps reflect the terrain. After a typhoon a local site may be without power. In the city, check Ohayu is your data line with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
