Coverage and network

Uzbekistan mobile networks
Uzbekistan averages about 63 Mbps and ranks 73rd, with Tashkent around 93. The capital and the Silk Road cities are covered; the steppe and the desert between them are sparse, and the country is large.

Tashkent and Uzbekistan, specifically
- Central Tashkent: Reliable 4G with 5G in parts. The city is spread out on a Soviet grid, which suits a network.
- The metro: Covered, and worth riding for its own sake - the stations are among the most ornate in the former Soviet Union. Photography was banned for decades and is now allowed.
- Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva: The Silk Road cities are covered around the monuments and the old towns. Khiva's walled Ichan Kala is compact and fine.
- The high-speed train: The Afrosiyob to Samarkand and Bukhara holds signal for most of the journey, with gaps across the emptier stretches.
- The desert and the Aral region: Long distances with little coverage. The road to Nukus and the Aral Sea bed is remote, and Muynak has service while the surrounding desert does not.
All of Uzbekistan
The plan covers the whole country. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan across the borders each need their own arrangements.

Arriving in Tashkent
Tashkent airport
Tashkent International has free terminal Wi-Fi, and there are two SIM shops in the baggage claim area that stay open around the clock - useful, because a lot of flights here land in the middle of the night.

Frequently asked questions
What does an Uzbek SIM require?
Your passport. Uzbekistan registers prepaid lines against a passport number and the SIM is issued in your name - standard practice, done at the counter. The two shops in Tashkent airport's baggage claim are open 24 hours, which matters given how many flights arrive at 3am. An Ohayu plan issues no Uzbek number, so there is nothing to register.
Is there coverage on the Silk Road route?
In the cities, yes - Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are all covered around the sites and the old towns. Between them the country is mostly steppe and desert, and the high-speed train holds signal unevenly across the emptier stretches. Download maps for the road sections.
How fast is the network?
Modest: about 63 Mbps nationally and 93 in Tashkent, on mostly 4G with some 5G in the capital. Fine for maps, messaging and calls. The Silk Road cities are not where you want to be uploading video.
eSIM not working in Tashkent?
Out towards Nukus or the Aral region, long gaps are normal. In the city, make Ohayu the mobile data line, enable roaming, then flip Airplane mode once. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
