best places to travel in November

November is one of my favorite months to travel. It’s that season when you can choose exactly what mood you’re in. Do you want early winter magic, the last bursts of autumn colors, or a warm escape from the cold? Over the years, I’ve tested all three.

In this article, I’ll share destinations that are worth considering right now – places where November feels special, whether it’s the first snow in Lapland, the truffle season in Tuscany, or lanterns filling the night sky in Thailand.

Lapland, Finland

Lapland is Finland’s far north. Here, winter starts early, and snow usually sticks by November with temperatures around -5°C. It is good for families, couples chasing the northern lights, or anyone wanting winter without December crowds.

Flights: European returns to Rovaniemi are often €150-€250; from the US, it’s around $600.

Lapland, Finland traveling in November

Why November works

When I first visited Lapland in November, I was surprised at how quickly the Christmas spirit settled in. The first snow had just fallen, the streets were already decorated, and yet there weren’t the huge December crowds. That’s what makes it so magical: you feel like you’ve arrived before everyone else.

Quick facts

  • Climate: -5°C to 0°C (occasionally dropping to -10°C).
  • Currency: EUR (€).
  • Time zone: UTC+2 (Eastern European Time, EET).
  • Mobile operators: Elisa, Telia Finland, DNA, or Ohayu eSIM for Finland to get access to all of them at once (and avoid roaming fees from your home carrier).

What to do with kids

  • Santa Claus Village: I’ll be honest – even as an adult, meeting Santa here was charming. Children love the reindeer sleigh rides and the whole fairytale setting.
  • Arktikum Museum: Don’t skip this. It’s interactive, so kids stay engaged, but adults (me included) learn a lot about Sámi culture and the northern lights.
  • Ranua Wildlife Park: It’s one of the few places above the Arctic Circle where you can see Arctic animals up close. My tip: go early in the day when animals are most active.

Where to stay

I’ve rented both family cottages and hotels. Cottages give you space and privacy, but hotels are often better with children because of the pool, sauna, and extra activities.

  • Dormitory beds cost around $44 per night.
  • Mid-range 3-star hotels from $105.
  • Glass-roofed igloos (my dream) are available if you want to splurge.

Namibia, Southern Africa

Namibia is where the desert meets the ocean, with daytime temperatures around 25-30°C in November. It’s good for wildlife safaris in Etosha, road trips through wide-open landscapes, and escaping the European winter.

Flights: European returns to Windhoek are approximately €600-€750; from the US, around $900-$1100 with one stop.

visiting Namibia, Southern Africa in November

Why travel in November

It’s the start of the rainy season in Namibia, but the weather is still comfortable, and the crowds are smaller. What I love most is how nature comes alive again – dry plains suddenly turn green, and animals gather around waterholes.

Quick facts

  • Climate: +25°C to +35°C, hot and mostly dry.
  • Currency: Namibian Dollar (NAD); 1 USD ≈ 18-20 NAD.
  • Time zone: UTC+2 (Central Africa Time, CAT).
  • Mobile networks: MTC Namibia, TN Mobile, Paratus Namibia.

Highlights with kids

  • Etosha National Park: The best safari option if you’re traveling with children. Roads are well-maintained, and you can do self-drive safaris. Seeing elephants, giraffes, and zebras up close is something my younger cousins still talk about years later.
  • Namib Desert: It’s about 55-80 million years old. The red dunes here are breathtaking. If you’re traveling with kids, climb Dune 45 early in the morning before the sun gets too strong.
  • Sossusvlei: Its Martian landscapes look like something from another planet. Even teenagers are impressed (and that’s saying something).

Places to stay

Accommodation in Namibia is surprisingly flexible.

  • Budget campsites: from $7 per night.
  • Average lodges: from $20.
  • Luxury safari lodges: up to $1,000.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai sits in northern Thailand, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside. November is ideal: temperatures are around 25°C, the rainy season is over, and the skies are clear. It’s good for cultural exploration, lantern festivals, and enjoying local food.

Flights: in November, European trips are €450-€650; from the US, you need to spend around $800-$1000 with one stop.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - best places to visit in November

Why visit in November

If you’ve never been to Thailand in November, you’re in for a treat. Chiang Mai celebrates two of its biggest festivals – Loi Krathong and Yi Peng – and they completely transform the city. I was there in 2019, and watching thousands of lanterns rise into the night sky is still one of my favorite travel memories.

Quick facts

  • Climate: +20°C to +28°C, dry season.
  • Currency: Thai Baht (THB); 1 USD ≈ 35–36 THB.
  • Time zone: UTC+7 (Indochina Time, ICT).
  • Mobile operators: AIS, TrueMove H, DTAC – or install an Ohayu eSIM for Thailand before flying in and activate it after landing to get mobile internet.

Festival highlights

  • Loi Krathong is a festival of water: People launch small baskets (krathongs) with flowers and candles into the Ping River. In Chiang Mai, this festival merges with Yi Peng.
  • Yi Peng: Thousands of lanterns released into the sky. I recommend watching from Tha Phae Gate or Nawarat Bridge for the best views.
  • Street life: Parades, dance shows, and open-air markets make the whole Old Town lively.

Where to stay

Stay in the Old Town if you want to be close to the action. Book early – I learned the hard way when I left it too late.

  • Budget hostels: from $5 per night.
  • Comfortable mid-range: from $10.
  • Premium hotels: from $100.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik is Iceland’s compact capital, surrounded by dramatic views of volcanoes, geysers, and waterfalls. November is early winter here: temperatures are around 0°C, and there’s a chance to see the northern lights. It’s good for couples, adventure travelers, and anyone chasing winter scenery.

Flights: European returns are usually €150-€300; from the US, flights will cost you around $500-$700.

Reykjavik, Iceland in November

Why November works

It is a festival season in Iceland. The Airwaves music festival takes over Reykjavík, and I love how it turns the city into a mix of local life and international music. You still get all geysers, waterfalls, and northern lights, and you’ve got a trip that feels very different from peak winter tourism in December and January.

Quick facts

  • Climate: +1°C to +5°C, cool, windy, and rainy.
  • Currency: Icelandic Krona (ISK); 1 USD ≈ 124 ISK.
  • Time zone: UTC+0.
  • Mobile connectivity: Síminn, Vodafone Iceland, Nova – or get an Ohayu eSIM for Iceland to skip local SIM purchases.

Highlights

  • Iceland Airwaves Festival: Music in bars, clubs, and even shops. I enjoyed the small-venue vibe – it feels personal compared to huge open-air festivals.
  • Blue Lagoon: Just outside Reykjavík, the thermal pools are perfect after cold days. I went while it was snowing, and sitting in +39°C water with flakes falling around was surreal.

Places to Stay

Reykjavík has options for every budget.

  • Cheapest: from $40 per night.
  • Upscale: from $200.

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany is Italy’s picturesque heartland, famous for rolling hills, vineyards, and medieval towns. November is ideal, temperatures are 15-22°C. It’s perfect for wine lovers, history buffs, and anyone who enjoys slow-paced scenic travel.

Flights: from Europe, return tickets are typically €80-€200; from the US, expect around $600-$900 with one stop.

Why travel in November

It is truffle season, and Tuscany knows how to celebrate it. When I went to the San Miniato Truffle Festival, I spent the whole afternoon tasting everything from pasta to cheeses infused with truffle. Add in young wine season, and this month is a food lover’s dream.

Quick Facts

  • Climate: +10°C to +18°C, sunny with occasional rain
  • Currency: EUR (€)
  • Time zone: UTC+1
  • Mobile operators: TIM, Vodafone, WindTre, Iliad. Please keep in mind that mobile connection in some villages can be poor, and check the provider’s coverage network in advance. Or activate an Ohayu eSIM for Italy, which can connect you to the local Vodafone Italy or Wind network.

Highlights for couples

  • San Miniato Festival: Perfect for strolling hand in hand while tasting truffle dishes.
  • Val d’Orcia: Romantic valley landscapes that feel like a painting.
  • Castello Banfi: Vineyards, a spa, and even rooms inside the castle. I stayed nearby, and just walking through the grounds was worth it.

Where to stay

  • Budget guesthouses: from $25 per person.
  • Luxury hotels and honeymoon places: up to $400.

Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is Japan’s cultural gem, home to ancient temples and tea houses. It’s ideal for culture lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a calm historic escape.

Flights: from other Asian cities, returns are usually $200-$400; from the US, expect around $700-$1200 with 1 stop.

Best places to travel in November - Kyoto, Japan

  • Currency: Japanese Yen (JPY); 1 USD ≈ 146 JPY.

  • Luxury ryokans: up to $1000 per night (and worth it for a special occasion).

Flights: from Europe, return tickets are usually €200-€400; from the US, expect around $700-$1100 with 1 stop.

weather and climate in Egypt in November

Why November works

Egypt is always popular, but November has the most comfortable weather – warm enough to swim, but not scorching hot. I still remember eating fresh mangoes from a street kiosk in Cairo during this season – they were a dollar a kilo, and of course, I ended up buying extra for my hand luggage.

Quick facts

  • Climate: +25°C to +29°C, warm and dry.
  • Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP); 1 USD ≈ 47-50 EGP.
  • Time zone: UTC+2.
  • Mobile operators: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Misr, WE – or use an Ohayu eSIM for Egypt to stay online right after arrival.

Highlights

  • Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam. It has great beaches and diving before the windy season begins (there are multiple windless bays with coral reefs).
  • Cairo. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum are always impressive, even though you usually need to spend another day to make a flight from Sharm or Hurghada, it is worth it.
  • Sahara Adventures. Quad biking in the desert was one of my favorite adrenaline kicks here. The cost from locals is $10-15.

Where to stay

  • Budget hotels: from $20 per night.
  • Luxury resorts: much higher, but affordable compared to Europe.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife enjoys warm, sunny weather in November, with temperatures around 22-27°C and very little rain. It’s perfect for surfers, beach lovers, hikers exploring volcano craters, and anyone looking to escape cooler European climates.

Flights: from mainland Europe, returns are usually €100-€250; from the US, expect around $600-$900 with 1 stop.

Places to stay

  • Budget rooms: from $20 per night.
  • Mid-range and premium resorts are widely available.

Final thoughts on the best places to travel in November

If I had to pick a single place to travel in November, I’d go back to Iceland for the music festival – but that’s because I enjoy smaller cultural events. Families might prefer Lapland or Namibia, and if you want sun, Tenerife and Egypt are unbeatable this month.

Wherever you go, staying connected makes travel easier – whether it’s booking a last-minute tour, checking maps, or sharing photos. I always use Ohayu eSIM, and it’s made my travel smoother across dozens of countries. So pack your warm coat or your swimsuit – adventure is waiting.
