eSIM travel FAQ

Everything you need to know before buying a city or country eSIM.

Ohayu covers 170+ countries and territories - including destinations across Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania. The city guides above link directly to plan pages for the most popular destinations.

A small number of countries have limited or no eSIM availability due to local network, regulatory, or partner restrictions: Afghanistan, Cuba, North Korea, Turkmenistan, Syria, and some African countries including Eritrea and South Sudan.

Most recent iPhones, Google Pixel phones, and Samsung Galaxy devices support eSIM, but compatibility depends on the exact model, region, and whether your phone is carrier-locked. Make sure your phone is unlocked, then check the Ohayu compatible devices list before you buy.

For most travelers, yes. A city eSIM lets you:

  • Skip queues at airport kiosks
  • Buy and install before you leave home, in your own language
  • Get online after arrival once the eSIM is active and connected to a supported local network
  • Keep your primary SIM for calls and two-factor authentication
  • Compare prices and data options upfront

Yes - you can buy and install your eSIM well before your trip. Your plan can be activated within 30 days of purchase. The validity period starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported local network at your destination, not when you buy it.

After purchasing, you'll receive a QR code. Scan it and follow the on-screen instructions to install. Some devices (like iPhones running iOS 17.4 or later) also support one-click installation. Check the Ohayu installation guide for step-by-step instructions for your device.

You can activate it after landing. Turn on data roaming and select your Ohayu eSIM as the preferred data plan. Once the eSIM connects to a supported local network in the area, you're online. If you don't connect right away, toggling Airplane Mode on and off usually helps.

Each city page shows the supported local networks for that destination. You won't pick a specific carrier - your phone works on supported networks like AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange, and others depending on the country. If signal is weak in a spot, toggling Airplane Mode can help reconnect.

No. Ohayu eSIMs are data-only - they don't include a local phone number, cellular calls, or SMS. For calls and messaging you can use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Skype over your data connection.

If you're using a country-specific plan, yes - each plan covers one country. If you're hopping between multiple countries, a Global eSIM plan lets you stay connected across borders with a single eSIM and carry over unused data between destinations.
