Best places to travel in April

April is one of those months that has something cool in all parts of the world. The best places to travel in April are Japan for cherry blossoms, European countries like Spain and Italy for sightseeing with fewer crowds, Hawaii and the Canary Islands for surfing and ocean rest, Alaska or Finland for snow and Northern Lights, and many more adventurous places.

Hot and warm places to visit in April

April is a good time to visit hot destinations before the peak summer heat and tourists. Maui in Hawaii and the Canary Islands in Spain have sunny weather; the ocean temperature is mild, and you can comfortably surf in a wetsuit, lie on the beaches, and spend a lot of time outside.

Start with the Road to Hana for jaw-dropping coastal views and waterfalls. Snorkel at Molokini Crater or relax on the golden sands of Wailea Beach. Don’t miss Haleakalā National Park for a sunrise you’ll never forget (yes, it’s worth the early wake-up call!).

And if you’re into whales, the second spring month is prime time for spotting humpbacks before they head north.

Where to stay?

Maui has options for every budget. Splurge on a luxury resort in Wailea or Kaanapali, or go for a cozy vacation rental in Kihei or Lahaina.

Pro tip: Book early, as April is a popular time for spring breakers and honeymooners.

Cold April travel destinations

If you still want to see snow in April, go north. Anchorage in Alaska and Lapland in Finland still have snowy terrain, winter sports, and you can even see the Northern Lights. April also has longer days, so you can explore even more places than in winter.

The weather is chilly but manageable, and the days are getting longer, giving you more time to explore. Plus, you’ll still catch the tail end of winter activities while enjoying the quieter side of Alaska before the summer crowds arrive.

Attractions

Why is Lapland one of the best places to travel in April, you may ask? Because of Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus. It’s a #1 must-visit. You can meet the man in red himself, explore the Arctic Circle, and even hop on a reindeer or husky safari.

For a quieter vibe, head to Levi or Ylläs, where you can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and Northern Lights hunting. Yes, Lappi is another place to see an aurora. April is one of the last good months to catch this breathtaking phenomenon before the midnight sun takes over. To help you understand, a 1-day Northern Lights tour costs $100 to $200 per person.
