Coverage and network

Coverage city, gulf and beyond

New Zealand mobile networks

New Zealand ranks 33rd worldwide at about 141 Mbps and Auckland measures around 183. The cities and the main highways are well covered. The country is long, thin and mountainous, and once you leave the state highways coverage becomes genuinely sparse.

Auckland and the north, specifically

  • Central Auckland, Ponsonby, Newmarket: Fast 5G across the isthmus.
  • The Hauraki Gulf ferries: Waiheke and Devonport crossings hold signal - the gulf is enclosed and both shores are populated. Great Barrier Island, further out, is thinly covered and proud of it.
  • Rangitoto and the volcanic cones: Covered on the summits, which is a good vantage point for anything you want to upload.
  • The Coromandel and Northland: Covered in the towns and along the main roads. The gravel roads to the remoter beaches and the Coromandel's east coast bays drop out, and Ninety Mile Beach has long gaps.
  • Driving generally: State highways are broadly covered; the back roads are not, and New Zealand's distances take longer than the map suggests. Download maps before any drive off the main routes.

All of New Zealand

The plan covers both islands - Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown, Fiordland. Australia is a separate plan.

Arriving in Auckland

Airport Wi-Fi at AKL

Auckland Airport has free terminal Wi-Fi. After a long-haul flight, and with New Zealand's strict biosecurity declarations to get through, having your own data on arrival is one less thing to sort out at the end of it.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Auckland?

One NZ, Spark and 2degrees have counters at the airport and shops in the malls. New Zealand does not require SIM registration, so it is a quick purchase - though after 24 hours in the air, having it already working is worth more than the small saving.

Is coverage good on a road trip?

On the state highways, generally. Off them, no - New Zealand has a lot of empty country and the gravel roads to the good beaches and trailheads frequently have nothing. Spark has historically had the broadest rural reach. Download your maps and do not rely on live navigation in the backcountry.

Does the plan cover Australia too?

No. They are separate countries and separate plans, which catches out people doing a combined trip. The flight from Auckland to Sydney is three hours - long enough that you should sort the Australian plan out before you board.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Auckland?

On a back road or out at Great Barrier Island, a gap is the country rather than a fault. In the city, check the phone is drawing data from the Ohayu line with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
