Coverage and network
Coverage around the lagoon
French Polynesia mobile networks
Bora Bora is small - a main island ringed by a lagoon and a chain of motu - and Vini covers the inhabited parts of it well. The resorts sit on the motu rather than the main island, which is the detail that decides whether you have signal in your overwater bungalow.
Bora Bora, specifically
- Vaitape and the main island road: Solid 4G. The 32 km road round the island stays covered.
- The resort motu: Generally covered, because the resorts are large enough to justify a cell nearby. Reception in an overwater bungalow at the far end of a pontoon can be weaker than on shore - resort Wi-Fi is usually the better bet indoors, and often chargeable.
- The lagoon: Fine close to shore and around the motu. Snorkelling trips out to the reef pass and the far side of the lagoon can drop.
- Mount Otemanu treks: Coverage on the lower slopes, gaps higher up where the peak shadows the signal.
- The flight in: The airport sits on its own motu and you arrive by boat transfer - both ends are covered, so you can message ahead about pickup.
French Polynesia, not France
The plan covers French Polynesia, so Bora Bora, Moorea and Tahiti all run on the same one. Mainland France and the EU are a different destination entirely.

Arriving on Bora Bora
Motu Mute airport
Bora Bora's airport is on Motu Mute and everyone leaves it by boat. It is a small terminal with basic facilities, no SIM retail worth planning around, and a transfer to arrange - the sort of arrival where already having data is worth more than usual.

Frequently asked questions
Will an EU or French plan work on Bora Bora?
No. French Polynesia is French territory but not EU territory, so roam-like-at-home stops at the border and a European plan will either fail or bill as full international roaming. Bora Bora needs a plan issued for French Polynesia. Sort it out before you fly - finding out at the resort is an expensive way to learn it.
Is there signal in an overwater bungalow?
Usually, but it is the weakest place you will stand all day. The cells are on land and you are at the end of a pontoon over water, so a bungalow at the far end of a long jetty can sit on one or two bars. Most resorts provide Wi-Fi, sometimes as a paid extra - worth checking what your rate includes before you rely on it.
Can I buy a local SIM on Bora Bora?
Not easily. Vaitape has limited options and the airport has none worth planning around, so most people who want local prepaid buy it in Papeete on the way through. Arriving with an eSIM already installed avoids the question.
eSIM not working on Bora Bora?
Out on the lagoon or high on Otemanu, a gap is normal. In a bungalow, try the terrace facing the main island - the cell is on land. Otherwise set Ohayu as the data line, enable roaming, and toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
