Coverage and network
Coverage at altitude
Peru mobile networks
Cusco sits at 3,400 m and is covered well enough across the city and the main Sacred Valley towns. The trekking routes and the high passes are a different matter, and altitude affects your phone as well as you.

Cusco and the Sacred Valley, specifically
- Cusco city and San Blas: Reliable coverage. The steep cobbled lanes and Inca stonework cause occasional dips rather than dead zones.
- Machu Picchu: There is coverage at the site and in Aguas Calientes below it, which surprises people. It is not consistent across the whole citadel, and the site now runs timed circuits you cannot backtrack on - so having your ticket and time slot saved offline is the sensible move.
- The Inca Trail and the alternative treks: Long stretches with nothing. The classic four-day trail crosses passes over 4,200 m with no coverage, and Salkantay is emptier still. Treat these as offline; your guide will have a radio or satellite device, which is the actual safety net.
- The Sacred Valley towns: Pisac, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo are covered. The terraces above them and the side valleys drop out.
- Altitude and batteries: Cold nights at 3,400 m drain a battery faster than you expect, and if you are trekking you will be higher and colder. Carry a power bank - there is no charging on the trail.
All of Peru
The plan covers the whole country, so Cusco, Lima, Arequipa and the Amazon all run on one eSIM. Bolivia across the border is separate.

Arriving in Cusco
Alejandro Velasco Astete airport
Cusco's airport has free terminal Wi-Fi and sits inside the city, minutes from the centre. Flights here are frequently delayed or cancelled by weather and the airport closes in the afternoons in bad conditions - live flight status is genuinely useful.

Frequently asked questions
Is there signal at Machu Picchu?
Yes, more than most people expect - both at the site and in Aguas Calientes. It is patchy across the citadel rather than uniform. The more useful precaution is saving your entry ticket and time slot offline: the site runs one-way timed circuits, entry is strictly by slot, and you cannot go back on yourself if you miss something.
Will I have coverage on the Inca Trail?
For most of it, no. The route crosses passes above 4,200 m through terrain with no reason for anyone to have built coverage, and the alternative treks like Salkantay are emptier again. Your guide carries a radio or satellite device and that is the real safety arrangement - do not treat a phone as one. Download maps and tell someone your itinerary.
Where to buy a SIM card in Cusco?
Claro and Movistar have shops around the Plaza de Armas and there are counters at the airport. Passport registration is required. Claro tends to reach further into the valley.
eSIM not working in Cusco?
On a trek or over a high pass, there is nothing to reach and that is expected. In the cold, check the phone has not simply gone flat. In the city, set Ohayu as the data line, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
