Coverage and network
Coverage along the coast and inland
Peru mobile networks
Peru averages about 51 Mbps and Lima around 73. The coastal cities are reasonably served; the Andes and the Amazon basin are where Peru's coverage map becomes mostly empty, and the gap between them is one of the largest in South America.

Lima, specifically
- Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro: Reliable 4G with 5G in parts. These are where most visitors stay and the coverage is fine.
- The Malecón and the cliffs: Covered along the clifftop parks. Down on the beaches below, coverage holds but the descent roads dip.
- Central Lima and the historic centre: Covered. Busy, and a place where locals advise against having a phone out on the street - a practical caution rather than a network one.
- The airport road: Jorge Chávez is in Callao and the drive into Miraflores takes 45 minutes to well over an hour. Coverage is fine; the traffic is the problem, and this is the stretch where ride-hailing beats the taxi queue.
- Out to Paracas and the south: The Panamericana is covered along its length. The desert either side of it is not.
All of Peru
The plan covers the whole country - Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, the Amazon. Coverage quality varies enormously between them.

Arriving in Lima
Jorge Chávez airport
Lima's airport has free terminal Wi-Fi and moved to a new terminal recently, so older guidance about the layout is out of date. Most international flights land late at night, when arranging a ride through an app is considerably better than the alternatives outside.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Lima?
Claro, Movistar and Entel have counters at the airport and shops in Larcomar and the malls. Peru requires registration against a passport, and the rules have tightened - expect the details to be recorded properly. Claro generally has the widest reach outside the cities.
How different is coverage outside Lima?
Substantially. The coastal strip along the Panamericana is covered, but the Andes and the Amazon are a different country as far as the network is concerned - long empty stretches, coverage only in the towns, and nothing on most of the trekking routes. Plan for that rather than being surprised by it.
Is it safe to use a phone on the street?
In Miraflores and Barranco, broadly yes. In central Lima and on public transport, local advice is to keep it out of sight - opportunistic theft is common enough to be worth taking seriously. Set your route before you set off rather than standing on a corner navigating.
eSIM not working in Lima?
If you have travelled into the Andes or the jungle, gaps are the norm rather than a fault. In the city, confirm Ohayu is your mobile data line with roaming enabled, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
