Coverage and the Fair
China mobile networks
China averages 179 Mbps at 12th worldwide and Guangzhou is comfortably covered. The date in your calendar matters more than the network: twice a year the Canton Fair brings in enough people to change how the city behaves. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Guangzhou, specifically
- Tianhe, Zhujiang New Town, the metro: Strong across the business districts and the full metro network, which is one of the busiest anywhere.
- Canton Fair season: In April and October the fair draws well over a hundred thousand buyers into the Canton Fair Complex. Cells around Pazhou saturate, hotel Wi-Fi collapses under the load, and this is the one time an unlimited plan genuinely pays for itself.
- Shamian Island and the old town: Fine throughout, including the narrow lanes and the riverside.
- Out toward the Pearl River Delta: Continuous on the intercity rail to Shenzhen, Dongguan and Foshan.
The Delta, and the mainland
One plan for mainland China. Hong Kong and Macau are separate - a common mistake on a Delta trip.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Guangzhou?
Carrier counters at Baiyun and shops throughout Tianhe. Real-name registration with your passport is required and queues at fair time are long. An eSIM avoids both.
What ID do I need for a Chinese SIM card?
Your passport, scanned at the counter - real-name registration is mandatory here and there is no way around it for a local line. Budget time for it, especially at Baiyun. An Ohayu plan attaches no Chinese number, so nobody scans anything.
Will Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work in Guangzhou?
No, and no eSIM changes that. The national filtering covers Google services, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and YouTube, and it applies to every connection inside mainland China. Sort out a VPN before you land, pull down offline maps, and lean on the local stack while you are here - WeChat, Amap or Baidu Maps, WeChat Pay or Alipay. At the fair, WeChat is what buyers and sellers actually use.
What happens to data during the Canton Fair?
It gets congested, sometimes badly. The fair runs in April and October and brings well over a hundred thousand international buyers into one complex, which overloads both the local cells and the hotel Wi-Fi most people fall back on. If you are working the fair, take more data than you think you need and do not depend on the venue network for anything time-critical.
eSIM not working in Guangzhou?
During Canton Fair, slow is congestion. If nothing loads at all, check whether it is the firewall by opening baidu.com; if that fails too, confirm the Ohayu eSIM is your data line and roaming is on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
