Electronics & tech

Now that you have an easy-to-use checklist, let’s review the necessary items in detail, from tech and connectivity to clothing, medication, security items, and documents.

eSIM and global connectivity

Connection is a very important thing during international trips. And I have to say that eSIM is a great SIM card alternative for international travelers. It’s fully digital, can be purchased online, and can connect you to a local mobile network in the destination country while keeping your home phone number active.

global-eSIM

Let’s take Ohayu eSIM as an example. You can purchase a plan with a set amount of gigabytes and days for a particular country (170+ countries in total), or choose a Global plan that works in 120+ destinations and automatically switches networks when you cross borders. It’s often cheaper than roaming with your home operator and more convenient than looking for a SIM card store in every country that you plan to visit.

In fact, modern cell phone companies are already offering eSIM-only devices in certain markets. You can check the list of eSIM-friendly devices and verify your eSIM compatibility here.

Computer and accessories

The next valuable asset while you explore the true digital nomad game is a laptop. I can’t recommend a specific model since I don’t know your line of work. Make sure it is lightweight, preferably weatherproof, and its specs meet your work requirements.

And take care of your wrists. They need proper support when they work, so an ergonomic mouse, mouse pad, and keyboard wrist rest are essential too. For example, I bought a wrist rest kit from Gimars last summer and still don’t regret it.

Travel adapter

Your journey between countries will show you how different power plugs and sockets look worldwide. A universal power adapter that fits any outlet makes your life easier.

Travel Adapter for digital nomads packing

It’s your travel companion, providing power in any location you visit. So it’s a must-have on your nomad list. My personal choice is the Tessan 65W Universal Adaptor.

Portable Wi-Fi

When Wi-Fi acts unpredictably, a portable router or hotspot like TP-Link TL-WR1502X (+ eSIM mentioned above) gives you the stable connection you need to keep working.

Portable Wi-Fi for traveling

This small device provides an internet connection wherever you go. Simply put, you will have internet access everywhere since your connection literally travels with you to distant places.

Cables and chargers

Picture running with your laptop through an airport and realizing you forgot your charger at the café. Not cool. So pack spare power banks and cords to power up your device in case it dies. The Xiaomi Mi lineup will be a good decision.

Backup devices

Speaking of dead gadgets, has your laptop ever crashed or stopped working right when you needed it the most? We all have. So having a tablet handy when things go wrong really helps. It’s a good backup device when your primary one goes AWOL.

Backup Devices for digital nomad traveling

Physical device protection

If you’re anything like me, you feel nervous whenever thinking about hurting your valuable devices. Some advice on what covers to avoid:

Reliable cases and sleeves are more than just pretty things. They must protect your technology against impacts and occasional security dog drool (which happens) during airport screenings.

In a word, treat your belongings with love and care. Ideally, consider compatible options from your device manufacturers (if they offer them).

Earphones or headphones

If you often work in loud cafés or share a room with many roommates, then noise-canceling headphones will keep you most productive. Even budget models like Soundcore Space One are a good buy. They let you concentrate on your tasks and stay calm in loud spaces.

Clothing essentials

Digital nomad packing list: male wardrobe

Digital Nomad Packing List - Male Wardrobe
  • Base layers and undies: You should always have a pack of moisture-wicking undies to keep you dry and refreshed. And, of course, there must be additional underwear for travel days that go on too long.
  • Versatile outerwear: A vest or sweater will add some warmth when you’re out and about. And a light waterproof jacket will protect you from the elements.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Adapt your wardrobe to the destination’s climate. Choose clothes in light breathable fabrics for hot climates and layers to keep you warm in winter destinations.
  • Formal/meeting attire: Have one set of smart clothes ready when you need to dress formally, including a shirt and loafers. And always pack a business tie and a blazer for special occasions.

Let me share a sample nomad clothing list with you:

  • 3-4 versatile shirts (mix of casual and button-up);
  • 1 blazer;
  • 1 lightweight jacket or hoodie;
  • 1 vest;
  • 2 pairs of quick-dry, wrinkle-resistant pants;
  • 1 pair of shorts;
  • 5-7 underwear;
  • 2 moisture-wicking undies;
  • 5-7 pairs of socks;
  • 1 pair of comfortable walking/travel shoes;
  • 1 pair of loafers;
  • 1 pair of flip-flops or sandals.

Digital nomad packing list: female wardrobe

  • Weather-adaptable pieces: Always prepare to handle multiple weather conditions. I study the weather forecast for where I am going (e.g., weather.com helpfully shows precipitation maps and severe weather alerts) and pack what I need. Ideally, bring a mix of lightweight and warm clothing to adapt to various climates.
  • Professional options: Just because you’re on the go doesn’t mean you can’t look sharp. I always include a dress and a pair of professional shoes on my list in case there are client meetings or presentations.
  • Professional vs. casual balance: Striking the right balance between professional and casual attire is key. Aim for a versatile, polished look that can take you from a client meeting to a cozy café in style. Think blazers, crisp shirts, and jeans that can easily dress up or down.
  • Layering strategy: Layering is a superpower for nomads. With the right pieces, you can stay warm on chilly mornings and cool on sunny afternoons. The art of layering with light cardigans, vests, and scarves creates a stylish, functional outfit.

I usually pack the following:

  • 4-5 versatile T-shirts (mix of casual and dressy);
  • 2 pairs of convertible/travel pants and jeans;
  • 1-2 lightweight dresses;
  • 1 lightweight cardigan or jacket;
  • 1 blazer;
  • 1 vest;
  • 1 scarf;
  • 1 pair of shorts;
  • 5-7 underwear;
  • 3 comfortable bras;
  • 5-7 pairs of socks;
  • 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes;
  • 1 pair of professional shoes;
  • 1 pair of flip-flops or sandals.

Weather protection

Bring a pocket umbrella to prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws at you (Vicloon Mini Umbrella is always on my list). Don’t let a little rain dampen your digital nomad spirit!

Health & wellness items

Medications

travel Medications list

Being prepared for minor mishaps is key. Ensure your digital nomad packing list includes a compact first-aid kit:

  • bandages;
  • antiseptic wipes;
  • tweezers;
  • thermometer;
  • cotton pads and swabs;
  • elastic bandage wraps.

All the first-aid kit essentials recommended by the Red Cross are on this page. You never know when you might need them.

If you take any prescription meds, be sure to bring enough for your entire trip. Keep them in their original containers and carry a copy of your prescription, just in case.

Stock up on over-the-counter medicines (OTC) like pain relievers, allergy pills, and stomach remedies. You’ll thank yourself when you’re feeling under the weather in a foreign land.

Travel-sized toiletries & grooming essentials

Travel-Sized Toiletries & Grooming Essentials

Space is precious, so opt for portable toiletries and grooming supplies. Include the following:

  • shampoo;
  • conditioner;
  • body wash;
  • hygiene products;
  • mini-hairbrush;
  • toothbrush;
  • deodorant;
  • cologne/perfume.

Documents

Passport / ID, visas & insurance documents

Your passport is your ticket to the world, so treat it like the precious treasure it is. And don’t forget visas for the countries on your bucket list.

PassportID, Visas & Insurance Documents

Also, make sure you’ve got your insurance paperwork handy in case you need to file a claim or visit a doctor abroad.

Emergency cash & banking/credit cards

Store some cash for those “just in case” moments. Keep it in a safe place, like a money belt or a secure pocket, and you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way.

Emergency Cash & Banking Credit Cards

Cash is king, but a banking card and mobile banking are pretty darn useful too. Consider the following options for travelers:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred (no foreign transaction fees, rewards, Pay Over Time program);
  • Capital One Venture X (no foreign transaction fees, high credits, miles redemption, Priority Pass airport lounge access);
  • Wise Multi-Currency Card (supports 50+ currencies, low conversion fees, returns earnings);
  • Revolut (fee-free ATM withdrawals, real-time currency exchange, support for 150+ currencies, easy in-app management);
  • Charles Schwab Investor Checking (no foreign transaction fees, no monthly service charges, unlimited global ATM fee reimbursements, no minimum balance limit).

International driving permit

Remember to get your IDP if you have plans to drive in another country. It functions as an international license that matches your regular (national) driver’s permit.

Security and safety

Theft protection

Keep your computer locked when you’re away from it while in public areas. For example, use a Kensington lock to protect your belongings from theft.

digital nomad Theft Protection

RFID protection is another high-security item on your digital nomad packing list. Protect your personal data with an RFID-blocking wallet or passport holder. These devices will protect your information from unauthorized electronic access (i.e., pickpocketing).

Finally, have a list of emergency contacts on hand: your embassy, family members, and friends. Always prepare yourself for unexpected situations.

Digital security

Set up a VPN connection to protect your data when you browse the internet. Also, use a password manager to store your login information securely. I use the Proton service, which provides both a VPN and a password manager (plus an encrypted email), and I highly recommend it.

Digital Security for travelers

A recommendation: put your most important documents and files in two places – save them both to a server in the cloud (Proton as an option) and store them on an external hard drive too. Just as you need insurance to protect your digital nomad life, you need to back up your work to protect it from potential data loss.

Bags & storage solutions

Backpack vs. wheeled luggage/rolling suitcase

It’s the great debate: backpack or wheeled luggage? Think about what you want from your baggage and pick from these two options. Backpacks help you climb stairs and walk on rough ground, but wheeled luggage works best on flat surfaces.

And think about how you arrange your items inside. Fit heavy and flexible items at the bottom and adjust weight distribution towards the center and top when using a backpack. Here is a more detailed explanation.

Pro tip: roll your clothes instead of just folding them. Combining the two methods saves space, and rolling also helps prevent wrinkles.

Clothes organizers

Packing cubes help you stay organized and free up space in your bag. Your suitcase stays neat thanks to these magical storage areas.

Clothes Organizers

And cables? Your cords stay untangled when you put them inside cable wraps or sleeves. Besides, you will find the necessary cables faster when you know their exact location.

Quick-access items

Keep the items you need most in your carry-on (e.g., your laptop/tablet, cell phone, cash, and medications). You may also want to use a waist bag for quicker access. For even more protection against pickpockets and thieves, consider a money belt or other discreet security items. I really like the RFID block money belt from PeakGear – a highly anti-theft thing.

Quick-access Items for travelers

Store your passport, visa, insurance paperwork, and other documents together in one place. For example, keep them ready to use with a portable document organizer.

In addition to all of the above, my carry-on list always includes a change of clothes, earplugs, and a water bottle.

Ensure that your belongings are TSA-compliant. When making your digital nomad packing list, check that it doesn’t contain anything that’s prohibited and prevent overweight or oversized bags.

Location-specific considerations

Cultural considerations

Start your experience by learning basic words and phrases in the local language and following traditional ways of life. Dress appropriately when you visit sacred sites and remember to respect cultural norms.

Seasonal planning

Seasonal conditions strongly affect how you experience life as a digital nomad. Certain destinations are relatively cheap most of the time, but are busy during peak times of the year.

So organize your travels according to your digital nomad routines to get the most out of your remote work lifestyle. Our extensive selection of travel apps should be your top choice. These helpful applications will let you plan your trips, find places to stay, manage your expenses, and meet other remote workers.
