A VPN creates a secure tunnel between your device and the server, encrypting all traffic and hiding your IP address. This blocks password sniffing, evil-twin hotspot spoofing, and man-in-the-middle attacks where your data is intercepted. You’ll get secure access to banks, protection of sensitive data, and bypass geo-blocking for work. But not all VPNs are equally useful, because some slow down the connection, others log, and others leak data. In this article, we will discuss how to choose a reliable digital nomad VPN service for travel, what to pay attention to when setting up, and why basic protection saves you from most threats.

Security threats while using public Wi-Fi

Working from cafes, airports, or hostels, I realized a long time ago that public Wi-Fi is convenient, but there’s always the risk of picking up something unnecessary and getting into big trouble.

Don’t rely on networks with a password, because they don’t guarantee security.

 For example, hackers can:

  • Intercept traffic through sniffing – imagine someone reading your messenger or seeing what sites you visit.
  • Create fake hotspots (Evil Twin) – a fake “Starbucks_Free_WiFi” at the airport where you enter important data.

  • Conduct MITM attacks – spoof the content of pages (e.g., insert phishing forms).

I used to think the eSIM would solve all the problems. And you know what? It’s really cool. With an eSIM like Ohayu, I get mobile internet access in 170+ countries without relying on roaming from my home operator. It’s encrypted traffic through the carrier’s network. No fake hotspots, no sniffing my WhatsApp communication.

But the catch is that the e-profile only protects mobile traffic. As soon as I connect to Wi-Fi at the same airport, it doesn’t work anymore. And that’s 90% of the places I spend time: co-working spaces, coffee shops, libraries.

Also, the eSIM doesn’t help with the following.

  • Bypass geoblocks – if I’m in China, Google and WhatsApp are still inaccessible without a VPN.
  • Hide IP address – for example, when I need to log into a corporate system that only allows access from certain countries.

That’s why I use eSIM and a virtual private network in tandem. The first is for mobile boarding without roaming, and the second is for protection on Wi-Fi and access to the necessary resources. This is an ideal solution because together they reduce digital security risks to zero.

Criteria for choosing a digital nomad VPN

When choosing a VPN, I tested dozens of services in different parts of the world – from cafes in Bangkok to airports in Europe. It turned out that not all of them are equally useful: some crash when switching between networks, others leak IP addresses, and others simply don’t work in countries with strict censorship. Here’s what I advise you to pay attention to.

Safety

When it comes to a Virtual Private Network, security has to come first. Let’s take a look at what we get in this case and see what kind of protection these platforms offer us.

Encryption protocols

Encryption protocols - WireGuard gateway infographics

Modern protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN (AES-256) provide a balance of speed and protection. For example, WireGuard is great for video calls, and AES-256 is great for handling sensitive data.

Avoid outdated protocols (PPTP, L2TP) – they are easy to hack.

No-log policy

The service should not store logs of your activity. Check whether the virtual private network has been independently audited. For example:

  • NordVPN confirms its “zero logs” policy with a PwC audit.
  • Mullvad doesn’t require registration at all – you can connect via a random account number.

Additional features

  • Kill Switch – blocks the Internet when the session is interrupted, so that the IP does not “shine”.
  • Double VPN – traffic passes through two servers. Useful in countries with total surveillance.

Speed and stability

There have been times when I’ve canceled some services because of lags in Zoom or the inability to bypass X blocking in Turkey. Therefore, I advise you to do the following things.

Test the speed via Speedtest on different servers. For example:

  • Surfshark in Europe gives 80-100 Mbps (enough for streaming).
  • NordVPN in Asia sometimes drops down to 30 Mbps.
  • Number of servers – the more servers, the lower the load. Some services have 9000+ servers, but many are dead.

Bypassing blocking

Even top-of-the-line solutions may not work in China or the UAE. Here are some important considerations.

  • Specialized servers to bypass censorship (NordVPN has “Obfuscated Servers”).
  • Stealth-mode support – masks traffic as regular HTTPS (works in Surfshark).
  • Server locations: I don’t recommend Mullvad for Asia – there are only 3 servers there.

Top 3 trusted VPN services

NordVPN

It’s a great option if you want it all at once. Unlike many other digital nomad VPN options, NordVPN works in China and the UAE. Has 7200+ servers in 60 countries, which provides a wide coverage. Also, from the features that can be highlighted built-in antivirus and even an ad blocker, which made me very happy.

The price is a disadvantage, but they often have discounts and various promotions.

I got the plan for a year, and it only cost me $5.99 a month, just on the discount. In addition to the main function, I also got the following features:

  • Anti-malware & browsing protection
  • Ad & tracker blocker
  • Password manager & breach scanner

This service is also convenient because you can pay for it in any way you want, such as credit cards (Visa, MC, Amex), PayPal, Cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, Monero), and so on.

Surfshark

If you own a lot of devices, then this offer is great for you. This service allows you to connect an unlimited number of devices. You also benefit from the following.

  • NoBorders status: automatically bypasses hard VPN blocking (relevant for countries with censorship).
  • CleanWeb 3.0 comprehensive protection: blocks ads, trackers, phishing, and malicious sites, and has a built-in antivirus.
  • Camouflage Mode: disguises VPN traffic as normal traffic, bypassing DPI analysis (Deep Packet Inspection).
  • Best Price: one of the best value-for-money offers. I purchased the 15-month package for only $55.

The payment methods here are exactly the same as in the NordVPN service. Unfortunately, there is no free plan.

Mullvad

If you are paranoid, I recommend this service. An account is created via a random 16-digit number – no email, name, or phone needed. It’s also where all the client applications are open source. The distinguishing feature of this service is the fixed price for any subscription period, which is $5.80

Payment is possible via cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Monero (XMR), and Ripple (XRP). It is also possible to purchase services by bank transfer or card. Payment systems such as PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay are NOT accepted (to minimize tracking). The trick of this service is that you can make a cash payment! Just put the money in an envelope and mail it in. Accepts the following currencies: EUR, USD, GBP, SEK, NOK, CHF, CAD, AUD, NZD.

Configuring your own VPN server

Sometimes, even the top services are not up to the task. For example, when you need a server in a specific country that is not on your provider’s list, or when you don’t want to depend on someone else’s infrastructure. If you like experimentation, you can try to run your own server. It’s a bit hard, but quite an interesting experience that I recommend everyone try.

Selecting a VPS

For the server, any VPS  with WireGuard or OpenVPN support will do. I tested:

  • DigitalOcean: fast activation, but more expensive for developing countries.
  • Hetzner: cheaper, but more difficult verification.
  • Oracle Cloud (free forever): tricky tariff, but suitable for experimentation.

The main thing is to choose a server location. If you want to watch Netflix USA, rent a VPS in America.

Digital nomad VPN server installation and setup

I connect to the server via terminal (SSH) and install WireGuard – it is simpler than OpenVPN. I use scripts like wg-easy, which automates 90% of the work. Then I get a QR code to connect from my phone.

Important:

Pros

  • Data control: No logs, no third parties.
  • Stability: No traffic or device restrictions.
  • Price: From $5/month vs. $10-12 with commercial products.

Cons

  • Complexity: Unless you’re familiar with Linux, it will take hours (or days) to set up.
  • No blocking bypass: To access social networks from China, the server must be outside of China.
  • Risks: If a hacker breaks into your VPS, they will have access to all traffic.

eSIM and digital nomad VPN are the perfect duo

Combining an eSIM with a reliable VPN covers two major needs: international mobile internet access and online privacy.

With a service like Ohayu, I can get mobile internet and connect to local networks in more than 120 countries around the world. Without wires, physical SIM cards, or queues at telecom shops.

eSIM for global travel

Why is eSIM a must-have?

  • Fast activation – I scan a QR code and activate it when I arrive in the destination country. No queues, language barriers, or trying to explain to the salesperson that you need internet only.
  • Flexibility: I can use several operators at the same time (e.g., my home SIM card for backup calls + mobile internet from eSIM).
  • The virtual profile uses the operator’s built-in encryption, which reduces the risks of data interception through cell towers. Unlike public Wi-Fi, where attackers can introduce fake access points, the eSIM mobile network provides a direct and secure communication channel.
  • Losing your phone while traveling is a disaster. But with an eSIM, an attacker can’t just take out the card and access your number. The chip is embedded in the device, and the transfer requires an account password.

Tips for maximum efficiency

  • Activate your eSIM in advance

Don’t wait to board the plane – download and set up your profile at home. Test the services in airplane mode to avoid surprises like an incompatible network in a foreign country.

  • Add a secondary profile

Set up an eSIM on a second device. If the main gadget gets lost or broken, the backup profile will save you from a loss of connection.

  • Check device compatibility in advance

Not all smartphones and tablets support e-profile. For example, older iPhone models up to the XR or budget Android devices may not have this feature. Before buying a plan, go to the service website and make sure your device is included in the list.

To sum up

Digital nomad VPN  is a powerful tool for data protection and bypassing blockages, but eSIM has turned the rules of the game upside down. With a virtual SIM card, I forgot about finding local carriers, overpaying for roaming, and the risks of public Wi-Fi. This feature gives not only instant internet but also built-in carrier protection, tariff flexibility, and eco-friendliness. A virtual private network is still useful for accessing geo-blocking or encrypting traffic in coffee shops, but eSIM solves many problems with a safe internet connection.
