Four French mobile networks deliver stable service throughout the country. However, the coverage quality and internet speed can vary by location and operator choice.

Speedtest reports that France ranks 31st in the global ranking with 143.17 Mbps mobile download speeds and 26 ms latency. Meanwhile, the upload speed reaches 10.25 Mbps.

SFR 

SFR is Orange’s main rival in terms of infrastructure. The provider offers good signal and decent speeds. SFR brings 5G speeds of more than 250 Mbps in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux. It is often seen as the best option for people looking for a balance between quality and price. SFR is actively investing in the development of its 5G, making it a great choice for urban users. However, the customer service gets mixed reviews, and during peak hours, the service may experience network congestion.  

A big plus is regular promotions that enable you to purchase favorable rates with a large amount of data. There are unique packages that combine mobile, internet, and TV.

There is also SFR Cloud. This is a cloud storage for subscribers that allows storing files without restrictions. Moreover, you can additionally subscribe to beIN SPORTS, Deezer, Napster, unlimited SFR games and cartoons.

Bouygues Telecom 

Bouygues Telecom doesn’t have the same reputation as Orange or SFR, but it’s a serious competitor. It delivers stable coverage across the country, reliable 4G speeds, and is actively expanding its 5G infrastructure. Bouygues Telecom is investing heavily in improving signals inside buildings, making the connection reliable even in underground areas.

Its main advantage is affordability. Pricing plans are often cheaper than those of larger operators, while the quality remains at a decent level.  

The provider offers 5G in many plans without increasing the price. There is B.TV – a custom TV service with exclusive channels and content. You can quickly change the package without long-term obligations. This is the top 1 option for those who value signal stability and access to technological innovations.

The cheapest package costs €12.99 per month. This includes 20 GB of 5G internet, unlimited text messages, and paid calls abroad. There is also an attractive deal for €54.99 per month. It includes 300 GB of data, with 40 GB that can be used in 20 countries, a second internet SIM card to use your plan on another device (tablet, watch, etc.), and unlimited calls and text messages.

Free Mobile 

Free has revolutionized the market with its ultra-cheap tariffs, becoming a favorite among budget-conscious users. It is the perfect option for everyone searching for unlimited internet at a low price. However, there is a nuance – although Free’s 4G and 5G networks are gradually improving, they still cannot compete with Orange or SFR. It works well in large cities where it has its own coverage.

Instead, in some areas, Free uses network sharing agreements with Orange. This affects the connection speed and stability.  

The cheapest package costs €2 per month. It contains 50 MB of 4G/4G+ internet, 2 hours of national calls, and unlimited SMS and MMS. Additionally, you can buy 2 GB and 20 GB of internet. The most expensive option will cost subscribers €19.99 per month. This consists of 350 GB of 5G/4G internet, unlimited SMS and calls, 35 GB of 4G internet to more than 110 destinations, and the OQEE TV program. OQEE TV provides access to your favorite channels and entertainment programs.

Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, and Free Mobile comparison

It is easier to figure out who is the best choice for traveling in France based on Opensignal’s analysis for November 2025. The platform allows us to conclude that Bouygues is the most awarded operator. It has received 12 out of 17 awards, including joint wins in most 5G experience categories, except 5G Download Speed, which Orange won. The download speed of Bouygues 5G network is 214.2 Mbps, and Orange offers 273.4 Mbps download speed.

Free Mobile is also a reliable supplier. It has a decent gaming experience with 82.7 points on a 100-point scale.

Orange is also a worthy competitor. Together with Bouygues Telecom, it won the Reliability experience category. This is one of the French mobile networks that has achieved high results in coverage and stability.

Unfortunately, in terms of availability, Orange is slightly behind, falling behind its competitors by only a few points. In the meantime, Free Mobile became the leader in terms of 5G availability.

So, if you need the best quality and speed, the choice is obvious – Bouygues Telecom. If the balance of price and quality is important, you should check out SFR or Orange. Free Mobile is a good choice too, especially if the main criterion is low price. You can also opt for MVNOs and save money.
