best places to travel in January

The best places to travel in January range from warm islands like Sri Lanka and the Philippines to ski resorts such as Zermatt and Aspen. However, this is far from the entire list. I usually see January as a great variety of locations that can fit any taste. You can visit Asian or South American countries if you want something warm, or go to snow-capped hills at some of the most famous mountain and ski resorts if you like cold weather and activities, or even travel to some distant historical attractions during this month, because the flight tickets are at some of the lowest rates this time of the year.

In this article, I prepared the top 10 best places to travel in January, which are worth your attention, with a simple overview of local attractions, weather conditions, and prices.

Why traveling in January works

January often feels quieter for me, and I actually planned my vacation for this month for several reasons.

First, the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year’s Eve stops, and cities are no longer filled with tourists. Usually, you can get great deals from travel agents, airlines, and hotels that have fewer visitors. So, it’s a good chance to visit popular sights or museums without queues and crowds.

In winter, many warm countries and islands in the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere, like Thailand, the Maldives, Vietnam, Mexico, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Australia, have dry seasons. The temperature stays at 25-30°C, the water in the oceans and seas is warm, and the rainfall is low.

At the same time, January is the time for skiing. High season starts, which means that ski resorts are fully operational, with consistent snow and open slopes across the Alps and other mountain regions. Needless to say, this type of vacation is accompanied by fantastic views of the white mountains and forests.

I find January practical because it allows very different trips without fighting peak-season crowds.

Hottest places to travel in January

If you want to enjoy the hot weather and warm beaches, the best places to travel in January are island countries, including Sri Lanka, the British Virgin Islands, and the Maldives.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a place of tea plantations and blue whales. Winter is the perfect time for a visit. From January to March, almost all of the island has a dry season, so resorts such as Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, and Mirissa stay active and welcome guests.

During my last visit, I especially appreciated the beaches across the country. There are calm, shallow ones for families with children, and deeper water for surfers, divers, and extreme water sport fans. The water was very comfortable temperature.

The main cultural attractions of Sri Lanka are concentrated in the mountainous part of the Central Province. Those are the Temple of the Buddha’s Tooth in Kandy, Sigiriya Fortress with a palace on top, and the Golden and Cave Temples of Dambulla

A vacation on the coasts of Sri Lanka in January will be quite expensive. It is the high season, so the average price of a 7-night tour is around $2,000.

British Virgin Islands

If you want to have a sailing-focused trip in January, I can recommend visiting the British Virgin Islands, located in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

British Virgin Islands best locations

January is the perfect month to go on a trip here because the weather is dry and stable. Unlike summer and fall, hurricane season is long past; there are favorable winds. It is the best time to go on a yacht trip, see coral reefs, explore underwater caves, and enjoy longer days on the water.

  • Average temperature: 24°C
  • Time zone: AST (UTC-4)
  • Currency: US Dollar (USD)
  • Attractions: The Baths, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke Beaches

The Virgin Islands have a highly developed tourist infrastructure and a high standard of living. It makes the location quite expensive for traveling. For example, service charges in restaurants are included in the bill and take around 10% of the total order. This also applies to hotels, where +10% is added to the check. In general, the total price of a week-long vacation reaches $7,000+.

Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the best places to travel in January for those who love extreme sports. The city is located in South Africa and is a complete reflection of it: it is just as festive, colorful, and original. Here you can soak up the Pacific coast, but this is not the main advantage of Cape Town.

The fact is that this city is a real paradise for those who prefer active and even extreme recreation. The area offers the best locations for windsurfing and kite surfing, so you will find a lot of instructors and equipment rental outlets here. What about diving in a special cage with white sharks, bungee jumping, or visiting a crocodile farm? All these activities are possible in South Africa.

  • Average temperature: 23°C
  • Time zone: SAST (UTC+2)
  • Currency: South African Rand (ZAR)
  • Attractions: Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cape Winelands

Prices will pleasantly surprise you: a 4-5 day tour for one person will cost about $500. Food and entertainment are also quite affordable.

Cold places in January for snow and skiing

For those who love snow and skiing, we recommend visiting the world’s Alpine resorts: Chamonix and Zermatt. Here you will find all the winter activities and fascinating winter scenery.

Chamonix

For fans of skiing, the best places to travel in January will be the Alpine cities of France. The most popular resort is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. The town is located in a picturesque valley, right at the foot of Mount Mont Blanc, and receives tens of thousands of tourists every year. The resort is divided into five ski areas: Grand Mont Blanc, Le Brevan, Vallee Blanche, White Valley, Le Tour, and Le Fleur. There are trails for both beginners and experienced skiers.

In January, the weather is cold, snowy, and cloudless. That’s why it’s a great period to enjoy the glittering glaciers and thick snow cover, and take colorful photos. In addition to skiing, you can go on an excursion to the glacier and the Mer de Glace cave, ride through the long tunnel under Mont Blanc, and visit local museums.

  • Average temperature: 2°C

As for the price, the resort is more affordable than a vacation on the islands. It is possible to find inexpensive hotels and eat tasty and relatively economical meals. In high season, the average cost of a week-long trip is $1,000 per person. Unlimited daily ski passes cost around $90 for one adult and $270 for a family of four.

One tip for your trip: wear sunscreen, because the sun shines so brightly that there is a chance of getting sunburned even in winter.

Zermatt

Discover another ski resort in the Swiss Alps – Zermatt. It is a small mountain village that welcomes tourists every year with dozens of ski lifts, ski slopes, and an exciting safari to neighboring Italy. The first thing you see when you step off the train is a breathtaking panorama of the Matterhorn, and for this view, tourists are ready to come back here again and again.

As for entertainment, the town has many trails for beginners and pros, an ice rink, curling courts, tennis, squash on indoor courts, bowling, helicopter flights, a paragliding school, and many other activities to suit every taste. If you are planning to simply admire the scenery, you will find 30 km of cleared mountain trails for walking, including in the Gorge and in the glacial grotto at an altitude of 3820 meters.

For warm weather, one of the best places to travel in January is Patagonia, Argentina. In January, flowers and trees bloom here, and the temperature is about +15 °C. It’s a great time to see the glades of flowers at the foot of the snow-capped mountains and enjoy hiking in the warm air.

Argentina Patagonia

Argentine Patagonia is called one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and winter is a great time to visit it. So, January will greet you with warm weather, ideal for exploring the most secret corners of the Earth and wildlife.

If you want to immerse yourself in history, Porto and Havana will surprise you. They have great architecture, museums, cultural traditions, and, of course, great weather to enjoy all of these sights.

Porto

Portugal is famous not only for its warm ocean coastline, but there are things to visit in the country even in winter. The port city of Porto is one of them. There are many interesting things to do here for both lovers of antiquity and connoisseurs of modern leisure. We recommend visiting Porto to those who want to get to know Portugal from a different perspective.

Therefore, if you want to plunge into history, it is the perfect location for you: a trip to Havana is an opportunity to see Central America as it was in the mid-twentieth century.

Havana is rich in historical monuments. Here you can explore the oldest fortress in the Western Hemisphere – Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Most tourists know Rio for the huge statue of Christ, which is located at the top of Corcovado, 700 meters high. However, this is not all that will surprise you in this Brazilian corner. Neoclassical buildings, promenades, giant evergreen palm trees, exotic flowers, beautiful beaches – all this awaits you in Rio.

The most prominent attraction of the city is its nature. Dense forests, mountains, and warm beaches have gathered here. In addition to natural monuments, families with children will be interested in visiting the largest water park in Latin America, Rio Water Planet, with 42 cool attractions. How to stay connected on your trips

When I travel, a stable Internet connection means a lot. It’s a necessity because fast mobile internet helps to plan routes on Google Maps, share photos with my family, make reservations, and even keep up with work.

eSIMs simplify this process because they are already built into many supported phones and don’t require you to look for a physical SIM card store when you arrive in a foreign country. So if you’re looking for a travel eSIM for a single country, check Ohayu country plans for 170+ destinations. But if you plan to travel to several countries during one month, Global eSIM might be a cheaper alternative.

global eSIM plans

Here is how eSIM setup works:

  • You choose the country in which you need services. Let’s say it’s France
  • On a separate country page, you can see the available plans with terms and prices. For example, a 3 GB package costs $7.99.
  • After checkout, you can install the eSIM right away (but remember to activate it only when you arrive in your destination country so it can connect to local networks). It takes minutes and usually doesn’t require special tech skills.

For longer trips or multi-country travel, I usually check coverage and pricing ahead of time, install the eSIM before departure, and activate it after I land using airport Wi-Fi.

Final words

January works because it allows very different trips within the same month. Some destinations are warm and dry, others are targeted at winter sports or city travel. The right place depends on pace, budget, and climate preference rather than the calendar alone.
