How Nomad works
Nomad has an app for iOS and Android. You can buy plans on the website, but you manage your profile and data usage in the mobile app only. Nomad works in 200+ destinations, but plans, prices, and networks differ by country. Packages are data-only, so calls go through apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime.
Plans
Nomad has local, regional, and global plans. According to Nomad’s help center (August 2026), unlimited plans have a daily fast data limit, 2 GB on most plans, after which speeds drop to about 1-2 Mbps, depending on the plan, until the allowance resets 24 hours later.
For fixed data plans, you can at least buy top-ups in the app (not in every region, though), but with “unlimited”, you just stay on low internet speed until the daily allowance resets. At the same time, all unused gigabytes expire at the end of the period and don’t roll over to the next day or month.
eSIM setup
eSIM installation is easy. You can scan a QR code or use one-tap install in the app. Either way, it takes a few minutes. The plan activates automatically when you first connect to a local cell tower in your target destination. Hotspot sharing is available and uses the plan’s data allowance.
Reinstallation rules vary by plan, so check them before you delete the eSIM or move it to another device.

Please keep in mind that, according to Nomad’s help center (August 2026), you should usually activate Nomad eSIM within 60 days after purchase; if you don’t, the plan activates automatically on day 60 or, on some plans, expires.
Network and performance
Speeds depend on the partner network in each country, your location (city vs rural), and congestion. As with any eSIM, the connection is usually slower indoors and during peak hours.

Turkey
In July 2025, Turkey’s telecommunications authority (BTK) blocked access to Nomad and several other eSIM providers within the country. This means you may not be able to reach their site while you are in Turkey, so it’s best to buy and install the plan before arrival.
China
China blocks Google, social media, and other apps. With a roaming eSIM like Nomad’s, traffic usually routes through servers outside mainland China, so these services normally work without a VPN, but some local Chinese services may have slight delays.
