Coverage and network

Coverage city, Clyde and the west

United Kingdom mobile networks

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and the network across it is solid and unremarkable, which is what you want. It is also the jumping-off point for the west coast and the islands, where the picture changes completely.

Glasgow, specifically

  • City centre, West End, Southside: Covered throughout. The grid layout of the centre helps.
  • The Subway: Glasgow's circular underground is the third-oldest in the world and shallow, so coverage in it is better than in London's deep tubes.
  • Loch Lomond and the Trossachs: Forty minutes north. The lochside road and the towns are covered; the hill paths and the eastern shore have gaps.
  • The ferries to Arran and Bute: Covered at both ends, dropping mid-crossing. These are short runs; the Outer Hebrides sailings are hours long and largely offline.
  • Football weekends: Old Firm days and big fixtures at Hampden move very large crowds through specific areas, and the cells there slow for a few hours.

The whole UK

One plan covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland needs a separate plan.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Glasgow?

The operator shops are on Buchanan Street and in the St Enoch and Buchanan Galleries, with prepaid packs in the supermarkets. No registration is required for UK pay-as-you-go. Data here costs more than it does in most of Europe, which is the real argument for arranging it beforehand.

Does the Glasgow Subway have signal?

Generally yes, and better than the London Underground manages - the Subway is shallow and its two circular tunnels sit close to the surface. It is also small enough that you are never far from a station.

Is there coverage on the west coast ferries?

At the ports and for the short crossings to Arran and Bute, largely. The long sailings out to the Outer Hebrides spend hours in open water with nothing. Download anything you need before you board, and note that these ferries cancel in bad weather.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Glasgow?

On a long island crossing, expect nothing mid-route. On a match day, slow is the crowd. In the city, check that Ohayu is your data line with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
