Real England conditions
- Rural and moorland areas: Coverage in the Yorkshire Dales, Exmoor, Dartmoor, and the Lake District can be patchy or limited to 3G in more remote valleys and upland areas. Main roads and market towns are generally covered; isolated hiking routes may not be.
- Train journeys between cities: Inter-city rail routes between London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds are mostly covered, but tunnel sections and certain rural stretches can cause brief signal drops. Downloading podcasts or content before longer journeys is sensible.
- Coastal and island areas: Coastal towns are generally well served, but clifftop paths and areas facing the sea can lose signal. The Isles of Scilly and other offshore islands have limited coverage compared to the mainland.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card when arriving in England?
Most major airports have WHSmith and Boots shops selling EE, O2, Vodafone and GiffGaff SIMs - open until around 22:00. Heathrow (LHR) also has Sim Local kiosks in T2 and T5 and 24/7 vending machines. Gatwick has vending machines in both terminals. Stansted is the exception - almost no SIM retail there, just Lebara and Lycamobile at a couple of shops with no vending machines. Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh also have WHSmith and Boots with SIM cards. If you're flying into Stansted or a smaller regional airport, a travel eSIM like Ohayu is the easiest route - after landing it can connect you to supported networks like EE, O2 or Vodafone.
Is ID needed for a prepaid SIM in England?
No. UK law only requires identification for contract lines - pay-as-you-go SIMs are sold without registration, so a supermarket or a WHSmith will hand one over with no questions. The reason to arrange data beforehand here is price rather than paperwork: UK prepaid bundles are expensive relative to the rest of Europe.
Why isn't my eSIM working in England?
In the Lake District valleys and on the rural branch lines, gaps are real. If that is not the cause, set Ohayu as the line used for mobile data, turn roaming on for it, and toggle Airplane mode. Still nothing? chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
