Hanoi, specifically
- The Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem: Strong coverage. The lanes are narrow and the buildings tall and thin, which causes occasional dips rather than dead spots.
- Crossing the road: Not a network issue, but the thing that will actually occupy you. Hanoi traffic does not stop for pedestrians; you walk at a steady pace and it flows around you. Do not do it looking at a phone.
- Ha Long Bay: Three hours east. The boats hold signal near the harbour and lose it among the karst islands - the overnight cruises are largely offline, which is rather the point.
- Sapa and the north: The train and the road to Sapa are covered in the towns. The trekking routes through the hill villages have real gaps, and Fansipan's upper slopes are patchy.
- Ninh Binh and Tam Coc: The valley floor and the towns are covered; the sampan rides through the caves lose it.
All of Vietnam
One plan covers the whole country - Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc. Laos, Cambodia and China across the borders are separate.

Arriving in Hanoi
Noi Bai airport
Noi Bai has free terminal Wi-Fi and sits about 35 km north of the city - a 45-minute drive. The SIM counters in arrivals are well known for aggressive pricing and for selling short-validity tourist packs, so it is worth arriving with your own data.

Frequently asked questions
What does a Vietnamese SIM require?
Passport registration. Vietnam has required every SIM to be tied to an identity document since 2016 and has enforced it hard since - unregistered lines get cut off, and there have been mass deactivations. A shop will scan your passport and sometimes photograph you.
The airport counters are the other issue: they are known for charging several times the in-town price and for selling packs with shorter validity than advertised. An Ohayu plan carries no Vietnamese number, so there is nothing to register and no counter to negotiate at.
Is Vietnamese mobile data really that fast?
Yes - 20th in the world at around 156 Mbps, ahead of Japan and most of Europe, with Hanoi at about 193. The 4G and 5G build-out has been rapid and cheap, and coverage in the cities is genuinely good.
Is there signal on a Ha Long Bay cruise?
Near the harbour, yes. Out among the limestone islands it drops, and an overnight cruise will be largely without service - most operators treat that as a feature. Download anything you want for the trip before you board.
eSIM not working in Hanoi?
Out in Ha Long Bay or trekking above Sapa, gaps are expected. In the city, confirm Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming allowed, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
