Coverage and network

Vietnam mobile networks

Ho Chi Minh City measures around 155 Mbps against a national 156, and it is comprehensively covered - this is Vietnam's commercial engine and the network was built for it. The Mekong Delta south of the city is where it thins.

Ho Chi Minh City, specifically

  • District 1, Thao Dien, District 3: Strong 5G. The central business district and the expat areas are the best-served parts of the country.
  • Motorbike traffic: Seven million registered bikes, and crossing or riding among them takes your full attention. Set your route before you set off - phone in hand on a Saigon street is asking for it to be taken.
  • The new metro: Line 1 opened recently and carries a signal in the tunnels. It has changed how the centre moves.
  • The Mekong Delta: Two hours south. The towns are covered and the narrow channels between them are patchy - the sampan trips through the coconut groves lose signal.
  • Cu Chi tunnels: The site above is covered; inside the tunnels, obviously nothing. They are also extremely narrow, and a phone is the last thing you want in your hands down there.

All of Vietnam

The plan covers the whole country, so Saigon, the delta, Hoi An and Hanoi all run on one eSIM. Cambodia is a separate plan.

Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City

Tan Son Nhat airport

Tan Son Nhat has free terminal Wi-Fi and is unusually close to the centre - about 7 km, though the traffic makes that 30 minutes or more. As at Hanoi, the arrivals SIM counters price well above the shops in town.

Tan Son Nhat International (SGN)
Free terminal Wi-Fi - about 7 km from District 1, heavy traffic
Long Thanh (under construction)
The new airport 40 km east, intended to take over international traffic

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Ho Chi Minh City?

Viettel, Vinaphone and Mobifone have shops throughout District 1 and the malls. Vietnam requires the line to be registered against your passport, and shop staff do it on the spot. Avoid the airport counters if you can - the mark-up there is substantial and the validity terms are often shorter than advertised.

Do I need to register a travel eSIM in Vietnam?

No. Registration applies to Vietnamese lines - and it is enforced, with unregistered numbers cut off in periodic sweeps. A foreign-issued roaming plan is not a Vietnamese line and issues no local number, so it falls outside the requirement.

Is there coverage in the Mekong Delta?

In the towns, yes. Out in the narrow channels and among the orchards it comes and goes, and the sampan sections of a delta tour will drop. It is a day trip from the city, so download the map beforehand rather than relying on the boat having signal.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Ho Chi Minh City?

In the Cu Chi tunnels or on a delta channel, there is nothing to reach. In the city, the usual cause is the data-line setting - Ohayu for mobile data, roaming on, then an Airplane mode toggle. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
