Hurghada, specifically
- The resort belt and El Gouna: Reliable 4G the length of the coastal strip, including the marinas and Sakkala.
- Kitesurfing and boat trips: Fine at the shore stations and lagoons. Once a boat is out past Giftun the signal goes.
- Desert safaris: Quad and jeep trips head inland where there is essentially no service. Most operators know this; you should too before agreeing to check in with anyone.
- The road to Luxor: Long stretches of the desert highway west have no coverage at all. It is a four-hour drive and much of it is empty.

Where to buy a SIM card in Hurghada?
Operator shops in Sakkala and the resort areas, plus airport booths. Passport and entry stamp needed. Given how unreliable the airport Wi-Fi is here, an eSIM installed at home is the easier path.
What do I need to bring to buy a local SIM?
Your passport, and ideally the page with your entry stamp on it. Egyptian law ties every line to an identified person, so the vendor photocopies the passport and files the registration before the SIM will carry traffic - allow a few minutes at the counter. An Ohayu plan issues no Egyptian number, so there is nothing to register and nothing to hand over.
Will WhatsApp calls work from Hurghada?
Often not. App voice and video calling has been blocked on Egyptian mobile networks since 2017, and the most recent independent review found it still blocked. Text, photos and voice notes go through as normal - that is what most visitors end up using. A few people report calls connecting on roaming plans depending on how the traffic is routed; treat that as luck, not a feature.
Will I have signal on the drive to Luxor?
Not for much of it. The desert highway between Hurghada and Luxor runs roughly four hours through largely empty terrain with long unserved stretches. Download your route and any tickets beforehand, and do not plan on being reachable for the middle of the journey.
eSIM not working in Hurghada?
On a boat, in the desert or on the Luxor road there may be no coverage. If calls specifically fail on shore, that is the national VoIP restriction.
