Coverage and network
Coverage this far south
Egypt mobile networks
Marsa Alam is the quiet end of the Red Sea, several hours south of Hurghada, and the resorts are spread thinly along a long stretch of coast. Coverage reflects that: workable at the hotels, sparse in between, and absent as soon as you are on the water or in the desert behind. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Marsa Alam, specifically
- The resorts and Port Ghalib: Usable 4G at the developed hotels and around the marina, though weaker than Hurghada or Sharm.
- Between the resorts: The coast road has gaps. Hotels here can be 20 or 30 km apart with little in between, and transfers from the airport are long.
- Diving at Elphinstone and the offshore reefs: No signal. Marsa Alam is a serious diving destination and most of the good sites are far enough out that you should treat boat days as offline.
- Wadi el Gemal and the Eastern Desert: Effectively nothing once you leave the coast road.
South coast, whole country
The plan covers all of Egypt, so a Luxor excursion or a Cairo leg afterwards is already included.
How to install eSIM

- 01
Buy before you fly
Choose your data plan before your trip.
- 02
Download & install
Log in to your account, tap your eSIM, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- 03
Land & activate
Activate when you arrive in Egypt. Turn on roaming for the eSIM and it connects to a local network.
Before you buy, make sure your phone supports eSIM — see Ohayu compatible devices list or dial *#06#. It's a free request to your phone's settings. If you see the EID number — your phone is eSIM-compatible.
Arriving in Marsa Alam
Airport Wi-Fi at RMF
Be careful with this one. The only free Wi-Fi we could confirm at Marsa Alam is inside the paid VIP lounge, and whether general arrivals has usable access is unclear. Given transfers here can run over an hour, arrive with the eSIM installed.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Marsa Alam?
Options are limited compared with Hurghada - a few operator outlets at Port Ghalib and the larger resorts, and airport booths that may not be staffed for every arrival. This is a place where arriving with an eSIM already working genuinely saves trouble.
Can I buy a SIM here without paperwork?
No. Egypt registers every mobile line to a named person, so a passport photocopy at the point of sale is unavoidable, and staff often want to see the entry stamp as well. Out here that means finding a staffed outlet first, which is the harder part. Nothing to register on an Ohayu plan - it comes with no Egyptian number.
Will WhatsApp calls work from Marsa Alam?
Assume not. The 2017 block on app voice and video calling over Egyptian mobile networks was still in force at the last independent check. Messaging and voice notes are unaffected. Some roaming plans reportedly slip through depending on routing, which is not something to build a plan around - and out here you may be out of coverage anyway.
Is there any signal on the dive boats here?
Assume not. Marsa Alam's best-known sites - Elphinstone, Dolphin House, the further offshore reefs - are well beyond coverage, and even the inshore bays can be weak. If you are on a liveaboard, plan to be out of contact for the trip and let people at home know before you go.
eSIM not working in Marsa Alam?
Between resorts, on a boat or in the Eastern Desert there is often no coverage at all here. If calls fail but data works, that is the national restriction. If nothing moves at all, the usual culprit is the phone using the wrong line - set Ohayu as the data SIM, allow roaming, then flip Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
