United Kingdom mobile networks

Manchester measures around 116 Mbps against a UK average near 76, which makes it one of the better-covered British cities. It is also the main northern airport hub, so a lot of people pass through on the way somewhere else.

Manchester, specifically

  • City centre, Northern Quarter, Ancoats: Strong coverage. The converted mill buildings have thick brick walls that weaken indoor signal in places.
  • The Metrolink: The tram network is almost entirely above ground and covered throughout, including the airport line.
  • Match days: Old Trafford and the Etihad each move tens of thousands of people through a small area. Networks slow either side of kick-off, and meeting someone by phone outside a stadium is difficult.
  • Out to the Peak District: Forty minutes east. The towns - Buxton, Castleton - are covered, and the moors and the Edale valley have real gaps. Kinder Scout is largely without service.
  • The airport: Three terminals with free Wi-Fi and a rail station, and one of the busiest airports outside London. The rail link is the sensible route in.

The whole UK

The plan covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - and since Brexit the UK sits outside EU roaming, so European trips need their own plan.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Manchester?

The Arndale and Trafford Centre have all four operators, and the supermarkets sell prepaid. UK pay-as-you-go requires no registration. As elsewhere in Britain the issue is price rather than process - UK prepaid bundles are dear compared with Poland or Spain.

Is Manchester better covered than London?

On the measured figures, yes - about 116 Mbps against the UK's 76 average. That reflects a compact city with recent network investment. The Metrolink being overground also means fewer dead spots than a deep-tube city.

Does coverage reach into the Peak District?

In the towns and along the main roads. On the moors it does not - Kinder Scout and the high paths have long stretches with nothing, and the weather up there turns quickly. Download maps if you are walking rather than driving.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Manchester?

Inside a thick-walled mill conversion, try a window. On a match day near a stadium, slow is congestion. Otherwise select Ohayu for mobile data, allow roaming, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
