Coverage and network
Coverage across nine islands
Portugal mobile networks
The Azores are nine islands spread across 600 km of the Atlantic, which is the fact that shapes everything here. The main towns on the larger islands are properly covered. Crossing between islands, and going inland on the smaller ones, is where it stops.

The Azores, specifically
- Ponta Delgada, São Miguel: The largest town on the largest island, and reliably covered along with the main roads out to Sete Cidades and Furnas.
- The crater lakes and the interior: Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo have coverage at the viewpoints; the trails down into the craters are inconsistent. Cloud and rain arrive fast up there, which is the bigger planning problem.
- Terceira, Pico, Faial: The towns - Angra, Madalena, Horta - are covered. Pico's summit climb loses signal above the tree line, and it is a serious 2,351 m ascent rather than a walk.
- The smaller islands: Flores, Corvo, Graciosa and Santa Maria have coverage in the settlements and much less between them. Corvo has a few hundred residents.
- Inter-island flights and ferries: Nothing over open ocean, and these are real distances - Flores is 500 km from São Miguel. Whale-watching boats go out of range within the trip.
The Azores are Portugal
The islands are an autonomous region of Portugal, so one Portugal plan covers all nine of them plus the mainland and Madeira.

Arriving in the Azores
João Paulo II and the island hops
Ponta Delgada's airport has free terminal Wi-Fi and is the main gateway. The smaller island airports are very small indeed, with little in the way of facilities, so arriving with data already working matters more the further out you go.

Frequently asked questions
Is a separate plan needed for the Azores?
No - they are an autonomous region of Portugal, so the Portugal plan applies to all nine islands and to the mainland. One purchase covers a trip that mixes them.
Which islands actually have good coverage?
São Miguel and Terceira are the best served, and Faial and Pico are fine in the towns. Flores, Corvo, Graciosa and Santa Maria have service where people live and very little elsewhere - Corvo's entire population is a few hundred. Plan the smaller islands as places where you are largely offline outside the village.
Do whale-watching trips stay in range?
Only at the start. The boats head well offshore and you lose signal during the trip, which is normal for the Atlantic here. Agree a return time rather than expecting to call.
eSIM not working in the Azores?
Between islands or offshore on a boat there is no coverage to find, and the smaller islands have long gaps outside the settlements. In town, set Ohayu as the data line with roaming on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
