Coverage and network
Coverage across the seven hills
Portugal mobile networks
Lisbon measures around 270 Mbps and ranks 16th among cities worldwide, well ahead of Portugal's national 143. If you are working from here the network is not going to be your problem. The hills and the old quarters are the only local complication.

Lisbon, specifically
- Baixa, Chiado, Príncipe Real: Fast 5G throughout. Genuinely quick - Lisbon is among the better-connected cities in Europe on these numbers.
- Alfama: The exception. Steep, medieval and built of tiled stone, with lanes that shadow signal and a layout that defeats navigation. It drops in places. Download the map - Alfama is where visitors get lost in Lisbon.
- Tram 28 and the funiculars: Covered along the routes. The 28 is packed most of the day, so the phone is harder to get at than the signal is to find.
- The metro and the Tejo ferries: Metro tunnels carry a signal. The Cacilhas and Trafaria ferry crossings hold up - the river is wide but both banks are built up.
- Out to Sintra and Cascais: The train lines and the towns are well covered. Up in the Sintra hills the palace grounds and the wooded roads have patchy stretches, and Cabo da Roca is exposed but fine.
All of Portugal, islands included
One plan covers mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores - they are autonomous regions of Portugal, not separate destinations. EU roaming applies throughout.

Arriving in Lisbon
Airport Wi-Fi at LIS
Humberto Delgado offers free Wi-Fi in the terminals, though the network it advertises publicly is not consistently documented - expect a browser sign-in. The airport is unusually close to the city, with a metro station in the terminal.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Lisbon?
MEO, NOS and Vodafone have shops in the Colombo and Vasco da Gama centres and along Avenida da Liberdade. Portugal requires identification for a prepaid line, so bring your passport; it is quick and the staff do it constantly.
Does the same plan cover Madeira and the Azores?
Yes. Both are autonomous regions of Portugal rather than separate territories, so a Portugal plan includes them at the same terms and no second purchase is needed. Worth stating because it is not true of every European country's islands - some overseas territories sit outside their parent country's roaming area entirely.
Is Lisbon really that fast?
By the numbers, yes: about 270 Mbps against a national average near 143, which puts it 16th among cities measured worldwide. The city is a common base for remote work partly for that reason. The Alentejo and the interior are a good deal slower.
eSIM not working in Lisbon?
In the Alfama lanes a drop is normal - climb to a miradouro and it returns. Otherwise select Ohayu for mobile data, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
