Coverage and network
Coverage tunnels, levadas and peaks
Portugal mobile networks
Madeira is a volcanic island that rises to 1,800 metres in about 20 km, and almost everything about its coverage follows from that. The south coast where people stay is well served. The mountains, the tunnels and the levada paths are the interesting part.

Madeira, specifically
- Funchal and the south coast: Reliable 4G and 5G across the city, the hotel zone and the marina.
- The road tunnels: Madeira's road network runs through an extraordinary number of tunnels, some several kilometres long, and most have no coverage inside. Driving the island means losing signal repeatedly for a minute at a time. Live navigation copes badly; download the map.
- The levada walks: The irrigation-channel paths run into ravines and through rock-cut tunnels where there is nothing. Some, like the Caldeirão Verde, involve walking through unlit tunnels with a torch. Treat them as offline and take a light.
- Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo: The peaks have patchy coverage and the ridge walk between them drops in the cols. Cloud sits on them most afternoons, which matters more for the walk than the signal does.
- Porto Moniz and the north: Covered in the towns. The north coast road and the Fanal forest are thinner, and Fanal is usually in fog anyway.
Madeira is Portugal
Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal, so a Portugal plan covers it on the same terms and the mainland and the Azores come with it.

Arriving on Madeira
Cristiano Ronaldo airport
Funchal's airport has free terminal Wi-Fi. It is also one of the more demanding approaches in Europe, built out on stilts above the sea, and flights divert to Porto Santo or back to Lisbon in high winds - which is exactly when you want to be reachable.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate eSIM for Madeira?
No. It is an autonomous region of Portugal, so a Portugal plan applies without any island supplement, and the same one works if you carry on to the mainland or the Azores.
Why do I keep losing signal while driving?
The tunnels. Madeira's roads pass through a remarkable number of them - the island is too steep to go around anything - and most have no coverage inside. You will drop out for up to a minute or two at a time, repeatedly, on a single drive. Download the map before you set off rather than fighting a route that keeps recalculating.
Is there coverage on the levada walks?
Patchily, and in the ravine paths often not at all. Several levadas go through unlit rock tunnels where you need a torch and will certainly have no signal. Take the map offline, take a light, and tell someone which walk you are doing.
eSIM not working on Madeira?
In a road tunnel or a levada ravine, nothing will reach you - that is the terrain. In Funchal, make Ohayu the mobile data line, enable roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
