Porto, specifically
- Ribeira, Baixa, Bolhão: Very fast 5G. The Ribeira's stacked riverfront lanes are tighter than the rest and can dip briefly.
- Vila Nova de Gaia: The port lodges across the river are covered. The cellars themselves are thick-walled and underground, so signal goes when you go in for the tasting.
- The Dom Luís I bridge and the funicular: Both fine. The upper deck of the bridge carries the metro and holds a signal across.
- The Douro valley: The train line and the towns - Pinhão, Peso da Régua - are covered. The terraced vineyard roads climb steeply and lose signal on the wrong side of a hill, and the river cruises drop in the gorges.
- Out to Braga and Guimarães: Both well covered, and the motorway between them holds up. Peneda-Gerês national park further north is where it genuinely thins.
All of Portugal, islands included
The plan covers the mainland, Madeira and the Azores, and the same EU terms apply if you cross into Spain - Vigo is closer to Porto than Lisbon is.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Porto?
Operator shops in NorteShopping and along Rua de Santa Catarina, plus a counter at the airport. Portuguese lines require identification, so take your passport.
Will I have signal in the Douro valley?
In the towns and along the river, yes. The vineyard roads climb steeply in switchbacks and you lose it on the shadowed side of a terrace, and the river cruise gorges drop out. Download the route if you are driving the N222 - it is the sort of road where a live map matters.
Is Porto faster than Lisbon?
On the measured numbers, yes - about 308 Mbps against Lisbon's 270, which puts Porto 12th among cities worldwide. Both are far above Portugal's 143 national average. Not something you would notice day to day, but it settles the argument.
eSIM not working in Porto?
Inside a port cellar in Gaia you are underground behind thick stone, so nothing will reach you. In the city, check the phone is drawing data from the Ohayu line with roaming on, then cycle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
