Coverage and network
Honest about coverage
Thailand mobile networks
Thailand ranks 35th globally for mobile download speed at 137 Mbps - above Australia (116 Mbps, rank 41) and twice the UK (76 Mbps). Bangkok is 191 Mbps download (rank 44 among cities), ahead of London (107 Mbps) and Sydney (128 Mbps). (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Real Bangkok conditions
- BTS Skytrain & MRT underground: The elevated BTS lines maintain consistent signal. MRT underground stations have coverage on platforms, but signal can weaken between stations in tunnel sections. The newer Blue Line extension has better mid-tunnel connectivity than older segments.
- Chatuchak & market congestion: Weekend markets like Chatuchak and areas around Khao San Road during peak hours can see network slowdowns from high device density. Loading speeds are typically slower in these congested spots.
- Chao Phraya & klong areas: Canal-side areas and traditional neighbourhoods away from the main commercial corridors can have spottier coverage. Major tourist areas and transport hubs are consistently well served.
One eSIM, all of Thailand
The plan covers far more than Bangkok - use it across all of Thailand. The same eSIM works whether you're flying to Chiang Mai, taking a ferry to Koh Samui, or travelling north to Pai.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Bangkok?
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is one of the easiest airports in the world for buying a SIM. AIS, TrueMove H, and DTAC all have large branded counters side by side in the arrivals hall, open 24/7. Don Mueang (DMK) has the same three operators but most counters close before midnight - if your flight arrives after midnight at DMK, get a travel eSIM like Ohayu instead. After landing it can connect you to supported networks like AIS or TrueMove H. Passport required at all counters.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Bangkok?
Yes. Thailand requires your original passport to register a SIM card - photocopies or phone photos of your passport are no longer accepted. Since August 2025, NBTC regulations (published in the Royal Gazette on August 29, 2025) also require a live facial biometric scan matched against your passport photo at the point of purchase. This applies at all airport counters including AIS, TrueMove H, and DTAC at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Tourist SIM cards are capped at 60-day validity by NBTC rules.
Travel eSIMs like Ohayu are data-only and do not require in-store registration, biometric scan, or passport check - they can be installed online before the trip.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Bangkok?
In a mall basement or the deeper MRT sections, expect a drop. Elsewhere, check that Ohayu is selected as your mobile data SIM and that data roaming is enabled for it, then restart the radio with Airplane mode. If nothing changes, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
