Thailand mobile networks
Thailand ranks 35th globally at about 137 Mbps, and Chiang Mai is well covered - it has been a remote-work hub for over a decade and the infrastructure reflects that. The hills north and west of it are a different matter.

Chiang Mai, specifically
- The old city and Nimman: Strong 5G. Nimmanhaemin in particular is dense with cafés built around people working online.
- Doi Suthep and the temple road: Covered up to the temple and the viewpoints. Further up towards Doi Pui the switchbacks lose it.
- Burning season: February to April, and the reason to check before booking. Agricultural burning across the north pushes Chiang Mai's air quality to among the worst readings in the world for weeks. It does nothing to the network, but air-quality apps become the thing you check hourly - and that needs data.
- The hill villages and Pai: The road to Pai is 762 curves through the mountains with long unserved stretches. The villages have patchy coverage; the trekking routes beyond them mostly none.
- Doi Inthanon: Thailand's highest peak. The summit area and the visitor centres have signal; the waterfall trails and the deeper forest do not.
All of Thailand
One plan covers the whole country - Chiang Mai, Bangkok, the islands. Laos and Myanmar across the northern borders are separate.

Airport Wi-Fi at CNX
Chiang Mai's airport runs the AOT network in 60-minute sessions. It is unusually close to the city - about 15 minutes - so this is one of the easier arrivals in Thailand.

Frequently asked questions
When is burning season and does it matter?
Roughly February to April, and yes. Agricultural burning across northern Thailand and over the borders pushes Chiang Mai's air quality to some of the worst measured anywhere for weeks at a time, with PM2.5 readings that close schools. The network is unaffected; what changes is that you will be checking air-quality readings several times a day, which is a data need rather than a coverage one. Worth knowing before you book a long stay.
Where to buy a SIM card in Chiang Mai?
AIS, True and dtac have shops in the malls and at the airport. Thailand requires passport registration for a local line. Tourist bundles are cheap and widely sold - the airport counters are convenient but priced above the malls.
Is there coverage on the road to Pai?
Not for much of it. The route is famously 762 curves through the mountains, and the gaps between villages are long. It is also a road people come off - if you are riding it on a scooter, download the map and tell someone your plan.
eSIM not working in Chiang Mai?
On the Pai road or a hill trek, gaps are expected. In the city, this is well-covered ground - check Ohayu is selected for mobile data with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
