Coverage and network
Honest about coverage
Thailand mobile networks
Thailand ranks 35th globally for mobile download speed at 137 Mbps - higher than Australia (116 Mbps) and twice the UK (76 Mbps). The island interior and smaller surrounding islands have less infrastructure than Bangkok. (Speedtest by Ookla, June 2026)

Real Phuket conditions
- Island interior & jungle areas: Coastal and resort areas have coverage. The hilly interior - including forested areas around the Big Buddha and Khao Phra Taew - may have reduced signal.
- Boat trips & nearby islands: Coverage drops significantly once you're on open water or visiting smaller surrounding islands like Koh Phi Phi or the Similan Islands. The eSIM only works within Thailand's terrestrial network - no satellite or maritime coverage.
- Patong peak season: During high season (November-April), popular beaches and nightlife areas in Patong can experience network congestion during evening hours. Speeds are generally better early in the day.
One eSIM, all of Thailand
Your Phuket eSIM isn't limited to the island - it covers all of Thailand. Use it in Bangkok before or after your trip, or in Chiang Mai and Krabi without any extra steps.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Phuket?
AIS, TrueMove H, and DTAC all have kiosks in the Phuket International (HKT) arrivals hall, most open 24/7. Passport required, cash preferred at smaller kiosks though main counters take cards. If you're arriving on a domestic connection or heading straight to a remote part of the island, a travel eSIM like Ohayu can connect you to supported networks like AIS or TrueMove H after landing.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Phuket?
Yes. Thailand requires your original passport to register a SIM card - photocopies are no longer accepted. Since August 2025, NBTC regulations also require a live facial biometric scan matched against your passport photo at the counter. This applies at AIS, TrueMove H, and DTAC kiosks at Phuket International Airport. Tourist SIM cards are capped at 60-day validity by NBTC rules.
Travel eSIMs like Ohayu are data-only and do not require in-store registration, biometric scan, or passport check - they can be installed online before your flight.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Phuket?
On a boat to Phi Phi or round a headland there is nothing to find. If that is not it, open your SIM settings, set Ohayu as the data line with roaming permitted, and toggle Airplane mode. Still stuck? chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
