Coverage and network

Thailand mobile networks

Krabi is limestone karst country - vertical cliffs straight out of the sea - and that geology decides where the signal goes. The towns and the main beaches are covered; the coves behind the karsts and the islands offshore are not.

Krabi, specifically

  • Ao Nang and Krabi town: Well covered along the beach road and through the town.
  • Railay and Tonsai: Reachable only by boat, cut off from the mainland by cliffs. Railay has coverage; Tonsai next door is deliberately undeveloped and much thinner. If you are climbing there, do not count on a phone.
  • The karst coves: Signal drops behind the limestone. A longtail boat trip weaving between the towers loses it repeatedly, and the four-island tour spends most of its time out of range.
  • Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta: Both covered in their main villages. The ferry crossings drop out mid-route, and Phi Phi Leh where the day trips go has nothing.
  • Tiger Cave temple and the hot springs: The temple base is covered; the 1,237-step climb loses it partway up and the summit is patchy.

All of Thailand

One plan covers the whole country, so Krabi, Phi Phi, Phuket across the bay and Bangkok all run on the same eSIM.

Arriving in Krabi

Airport Wi-Fi at KBV

Krabi airport runs the AOT network in 60-minute sessions and sits about 15 km from town. Onward travel is where the planning happens - boats to Railay and the islands run to timetables that shift with the weather.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Is there coverage at Railay and Tonsai?

Railay has it; Tonsai much less. Both are cut off from the road network by limestone cliffs and reached by longtail boat, and Tonsai has stayed deliberately basic - which is part of its appeal and a reason climbers there treat it as offline. Sort out your boat times before you go over.

Do the island boat trips keep signal?

Rarely for long. The karsts block it - a longtail weaving between limestone towers drops in and out constantly - and the four-island and Phi Phi Leh trips are largely out of range. Agree a return time with your boatman rather than planning to phone.

Where to buy a SIM card in Krabi?

Shops in Krabi town and along the Ao Nang strip, plus an airport counter. Passport registration is required for a Thai line. Ao Nang prices are tourist prices; town is cheaper.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not working in Krabi?

Behind a limestone karst or on a longtail between islands, there is nothing to reach. On the beach road, check Ohayu is your data line with roaming enabled, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
