Coverage and network
Coverage across Kyushu
Japan mobile networks
Japan averages about 68 Mbps and ranks 68th, which surprises people who expect it to top the tables - the fixed-line network is world class and the mobile one is merely good. Fukuoka is thoroughly covered, and it is the gateway to Kyushu.

Fukuoka, specifically
- Hakata, Tenjin, Nakasu: Strong 5G. The yatai food stalls along the river are open-air and fine.
- The subway: Covered throughout, and the airport line matters here: Fukuoka's airport is about five minutes by train from Hakata station, unusually close for a major city, so you are in town before a SIM queue elsewhere would have finished.
- Dazaifu and the day trips: Covered in the towns and along the rail lines. The shrine grounds are wooded and fine.
- The Shinkansen west and east: Coverage along the line with the usual tunnel drops - the run to Hiroshima and Osaka spends a lot of time inside mountains.
- The ferry to Busan: Coverage fades as you leave Hakata bay. A Japan plan does not cover South Korea, and the jetfoil takes under four hours, so the crossing needs planning if you want to arrive connected.
Japan, not Korea
The plan covers all of Japan, Kyushu to Hokkaido. Busan is a ferry ride away and South Korea is a separate plan.

Arriving in Fukuoka
Airport Wi-Fi at FUK
Fukuoka Airport has free terminal Wi-Fi, and it barely matters - the subway to Hakata takes about five minutes, making this one of the fastest airport-to-city runs anywhere. You will be in town before a SIM queue would have finished.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Fukuoka?
Counters at the airport and electronics shops in Tenjin. Japan does require identification for a local line, and tourist SIMs are usually sold as fixed-term data products. Given the airport is five minutes from the city, the queue is the real cost.
Does the plan work on the ferry to Busan?
Only while you are near the Japanese coast. South Korea is a separate destination, so the crossing to Busan takes you out of this plan - the jetfoil is under four hours and the overnight ferry longer. Buy the Korean plan before you sail if you want to land connected.
Is Japanese mobile data as fast as expected?
Not quite. Japan sits around 68th at about 68 Mbps on mobile, which is mid-table - its reputation comes from fixed broadband. Coverage is the strong point: it is dense, consistent and reaches the countryside better than most countries manage.
eSIM not working in Fukuoka?
On the Shinkansen, tunnel drops are normal for the mountainous stretches. In the city, select Ohayu for mobile data, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
