Real Osaka conditions

  • Underground stations & tunnels: Osaka Metro tunnels have reasonable coverage on most lines, though signal can weaken in deeper sections between Tanimachi and Yotsubashi line stations. Platforms are generally well covered.
  • Dotonbori & busy areas: During major events and peak tourist season, network load around Dotonbori and Kuromon Market can cause temporary slowdowns. Off-peak hours - early morning or late evening - typically give the best speeds in these dense areas.
  • Outskirts and industrial zones: Coverage is consistent across central Osaka, but some industrial districts near the port and outer suburban areas may see reduced speeds compared to the city core. All major tourist and commercial areas are reliably covered.

One eSIM, all of Japan

The same plan that keeps you online in Osaka works across all of Japan. Day trips to Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe - or an onward journey to Tokyo - are all covered without any additional setup.

Frequently asked questions

Coverage

Where to buy a SIM card in Osaka?

At Kansai International (KIX), Sakura Mobile is in the T1 arrivals lobby (open 06:00-23:00), and SoftBank and BIC Camera are nearby. SIM vending machines also run 24/7. Passport required, and all tourist SIMs are data-only. Itami (ITM) is domestic only - no SIM counter there at all. If you're arriving into ITM or just want to get online as soon as you land, a travel eSIM like Ohayu can connect you to supported networks like NTT Docomo or SoftBank.

What ID does a Japanese SIM need?

Japanese carriers verify identity for a local line, and tourist products are sold as fixed-term data SIMs rather than open contracts. A data-only travel eSIM is bought online with no verification step - Ohayu issues no Japanese number, so there is nothing to check.

Troubleshooting

Why isn't my eSIM working in Osaka?

In the subway's longer tunnel sections you may lose it briefly. Beyond that, confirm your phone is drawing data from the Ohayu line with roaming switched on, then toggle Airplane mode. If it stays offline, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
