Japan mobile networks
Okinawa is a chain of islands running 1,000 km southwest of the Japanese mainland, closer to Taipei than to Tokyo. The main island is well covered. The further down the chain you go, the more coverage becomes a question of which island.

Okinawa, specifically
- Naha and the southern main island: Reliable 5G through the city, Kokusai-dori and out to the airport.
- The central and northern main island: Covered along the expressway and the coast roads. Yanbaru forest in the far north is thinner and the interior tracks lose it.
- Diving and the boat trips: Coverage holds close to shore. Trips to the Kerama islands and the outer reefs go out of range, and nothing works underwater.
- Ishigaki, Miyako and the far islands: The main towns have service. Taketomi, Iriomote and the smaller islands are patchier, and Iriomote is largely jungle and mangrove.
- Typhoons: Okinawa sits in the Pacific typhoon track and takes direct hits most years. Networks generally hold, but power cuts take individual sites down and flights stop for days. Being able to check airline status is the practical need.
Okinawa is Japan
Okinawa Prefecture is part of Japan, so a Japan plan covers it and the Ryukyu islands with nothing extra to buy, and works if you carry on to the mainland.

Arriving in Okinawa
Naha airport
Naha has free terminal Wi-Fi and the monorail runs from the terminal into the city. If you are connecting on to Ishigaki or Miyako, those island airports are much smaller and worth not relying on.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate plan for Okinawa?
No. It is a Japanese prefecture, so a Japan plan covers the main island and the Ryukyus at the same terms - including if you fly on to Tokyo afterwards. Worth saying because Okinawa is a long way from the mainland and people assume it is billed apart.
Which of the outer islands have coverage?
Ishigaki and Miyako are fine in their main towns. Taketomi, Iriomote and the smaller ones are patchier - Iriomote in particular is mostly jungle and mangrove with a few hundred residents. Plan those as places you are largely offline outside the village.
What happens in a typhoon?
The network usually stays up; the airports do not. Okinawa is directly in the Pacific typhoon track and flights can stop for two or three days. The useful thing about arriving already connected is being able to watch airline status and rebook from wherever you are stuck.
eSIM not working in Okinawa?
Offshore on a dive boat or in the Yanbaru forest, gaps are expected. After a typhoon a local site may be without power. In Naha, confirm Ohayu is your mobile data line with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
