Real Tokyo conditions
- Subway & underground malls: Tokyo Metro and Toei lines have extensive in-tunnel coverage, but signal can drop briefly in older, deeper sections between stations. Underground shopping complexes in Shinjuku and Shibuya generally maintain good connectivity.
- High-rise interference: Signal inside certain older high-rise buildings, particularly in concrete-heavy structures in Akihabara and parts of Shinjuku, may be weaker than street level. Moving near a window usually resolves this.
- Crowd congestion at peak times: During Comiket, Golden Week, and major festivals, heavily congested areas like Shibuya Crossing can see temporary slowdowns due to the sheer number of devices on the network. Data speeds typically normalize quickly.
One eSIM, all of Japan
This isn't a Tokyo-only plan - it covers Japan nationwide. Use the same eSIM on the Shinkansen to Kyoto, exploring Hokkaido, or visiting Hiroshima - no swapping, no separate plan needed.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Tokyo?
At Narita (NRT) you can pick up a tourist SIM at the JR East Travel Service Center in T1 or T2 (open 08:30-19:00), or grab one from a Lawson convenience store, or use one of the SIM vending machines that run 24/7. At Haneda (HND) international arrivals, BIC Camera and vending machines are in T3, and SoftBank is in T2. All tourist SIMs in Japan are data-only - no voice calls. You'll need your passport. The airport options are solid, so you can buy on arrival no problem. If you want to skip the step completely, a travel eSIM like Ohayu can connect you to supported networks like NTT Docomo or SoftBank after you land.
Do I need to show ID to buy a SIM card in Tokyo?
Yes. In Japan, you need to show your passport to buy a local SIM card at airport counters or electronics shops like BIC Camera or Sakura Mobile. Starting from April 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) announced restrictions for SIMs with phone numbers - those are now sold to users with Residence Cards only, meaning short-stay tourists cannot get a voice SIM at all. This regulation only applies to SIM cards with phone numbers. Tourists can still buy data-only travel eSIMs online without identity verification.
Ohayu does not require ID verification because eSIM plans for Japan are data-only and don't include a local phone number.
Why isn't my eSIM working in Tokyo?
On the deepest Oedo line stretches a short drop is normal. Otherwise it is nearly always one setting - Ohayu chosen for mobile data, roaming allowed - followed by an Airplane mode toggle. If that does not fix it, chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
