Coverage and network
Coverage across the Klang Valley
Malaysia mobile networks
Malaysia ranks 23rd worldwide at about 155 Mbps, which makes it one of the faster countries in Asia and considerably quicker than Indonesia or the Philippines next door. Kuala Lumpur measures around 145 - the national figure is lifted by the whole peninsula being well built out.

Kuala Lumpur, specifically
- KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Bangsar: Strong 5G. The city centre is thoroughly covered and fast.
- The LRT, MRT and monorail: All carry signal, including the underground MRT stretches through the centre. The rail network here is better than most visitors expect.
- Batu Caves: The steps and the forecourt are covered. Inside the cave chambers, signal drops - it is limestone and deep, and the Dark Cave tours have none.
- Afternoon storms: KL gets heavy convective downpours most afternoons in the wetter months. They cause flash flooding on the roads rather than network problems, but they do strand people, which is when you want a working ride-hailing app.
- Out to Genting and the Cameron Highlands: The cable car and Genting itself are covered. The Cameron Highlands roads climb through jungle with patchy stretches, and the tea estate tracks lose it.
All of Malaysia
One plan covers the whole country, including Sabah and Sarawak across the South China Sea. Singapore and Brunei are separate.

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur
Airport Wi-Fi at KLIA
KLIA runs free Wi-Fi across both terminals. The airport is 55 km south of the city and the KLIA Ekspres takes half an hour, so the ride in is a good stretch of time to have data for.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card in Kuala Lumpur?
Maxis, CelcomDigi and U Mobile have counters in the KLIA arrivals hall and shops in every mall. Malaysia requires SIM registration against an identity document, so bring your passport - it is quick, and the airport counters do it constantly.
Does the plan cover Singapore or Brunei?
No. Malaysia surrounds Brunei and sits directly above Singapore, and both are separate destinations needing their own plans. Coverage runs right up to each border.
Is Malaysian mobile data fast?
Yes, by regional standards - 23rd in the world at about 155 Mbps, well ahead of Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Kuala Lumpur itself measures around 145. It is genuinely usable for work, which is not true everywhere in Southeast Asia.
eSIM not working in Kuala Lumpur?
Inside the Batu Caves chambers there is nothing to reach. Above ground, the usual cause is the phone using your home line - select Ohayu for mobile data, allow roaming, then toggle Airplane mode. Chat and support@ohayu.com are open 24/7.
