Langkawi, specifically
- Pantai Cenang and the west coast: The main tourist strip, and reliably covered.
- Kuah town: Covered - this is where the ferry terminal and most of the duty-free shopping is.
- The SkyCab and Machinchang: The cable car stations have signal. The rainforest either side of the ridge is patchier, and the sky bridge is exposed and fine.
- Kilim mangroves and the island tours: Boat trips through the mangrove channels lose signal between the limestone karsts, and the eagle-feeding spots are in narrow inlets. Trips to Pulau Payar and Beras Basah go out of range.
- The ferry to Penang and Kuala Perlis: Coverage at both ends and gaps in the middle - the Penang crossing is nearly three hours across open water.

Airport and ferry terminal
Langkawi International has free terminal Wi-Fi and is close to Pantai Cenang. Ferry arrivals come into Kuah instead, at the other end of the island, which is a longer transfer than most people expect.

Frequently asked questions
Where to buy a SIM card on Langkawi?
Outlets in Kuah and at the airport, and a few in Pantai Cenang. Passport needed for registration. Being duty-free, Langkawi is cheap for a lot of things - mobile is not especially one of them.
Do island-hopping boat trips keep signal?
Not throughout. The Kilim mangrove channels are hemmed in by limestone karsts and lose coverage, and the trips out to Pulau Payar go well offshore. Agree a return time with your boat rather than expecting to phone.
Does the plan reach Thailand? Koh Lipe is close.
No. Koh Lipe is about 30 km north and there are seasonal ferries, but Thailand is a separate country and plan. Coverage holds around Langkawi's own waters; the crossing takes you out of it.
